Two-time Oscar-winning actor Kevin Costner has been cast in the new adaptation of Superman, which will be directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan, Deadline Hollywood is reporting.

Tinseltown tattles are staying tight-lipped on the role Kevin will be taking on in the superhero epic, but speculation is abuzz that he could be tipped to play Superman’s birth father Jor-El, surrogate dad Jonathan “Pa” Kent, or even Daily Planet editor Perry White. Per the story depicted in the comic books on which the new movie will be based, Jonathan and his wife Martha discover a small ship carrying a young boy that crash-lands on Earth and decide to raise the boy as their own, naming him Clark Kent. Clark grows up to become Superman.

Kevin – who starred in The Untouchables before bagging his two Oscars for the 1990 drama Dances with Wolves — has kept a low-profile at the box office in recent years. Costner last appeared on screen in the 2009 flick Swing Vote, starring alongside Kelsey Grammer and Dennis Hopper.

Superman: Man of Steel, featuring Henry Cahill as the crimefighting action-hero, opens next year.
