The new iOS 4 software update, which we’re covered pretty extensively here on TFTS, offers the following key features (in brief):
* Multitasking: At last apps will be able to run in the background and “states” can be saves, meaning that apps will launch quicker and will load up into the same state as when exited (you can find a complete list of iOS 4 specific multitasking features here – additionally you can see a video demonstration of iOS 4 multitasking in action below).
* Improved HTML 5 video support: This means that video will be able to play within the browser (so won’t need to launch within a Quicktime window).
* Software Orientation lock: The iPad has it already, but iOS 4 will bring software support of this feature to the iPhone which can be implemented by double tapping the home button and swiping left.
* iTunes file sharing: iOS 4 includes the ability to sync documents associated with various apps through iTunes for access from your computer
. The ability to open up files inside of specific apps like on the iPad is also enabled.
* Bluetooth Keyboard Support: Ma ny have been waiting for this feature and now it’s here, allowing you to hook up a Bluetooth keyboard – which will make mobile document editing much more viable on the iPhone and iTouch
* iBooks: iBook won’t just be for the iPad, as iOS 4 will allow you to access and read these books on your iPhone or iPod Touch.
* New Email functionality: iOS 4 supports threading messages and sports a unified inbox much like that featured in the Mac OS
* iPod update: iOS 4 includes several updates to the iPod app, including the ability to create and edit playlists directly from your device.
