‘Once Upon a Time’ flips the Jekyll & Hyde script

In typical “Once Upon a Time” fashion, another classic tale has been given a huge twist.

Everyone knows Dr. Jekyll (Hank Harris) is the good guy and Mr. Hyde (Sam Witwer) is the evil one, but it’s never quite that simple to separate the heroes from the villains in Storybrooke. Their backstory is one of love, passion and murder and, surprisingly, Dr. Jekyll is the one with blood on his hands.

Thanks to a cameo from “Vampire Diaries” star Elizabeth Blackmore, we learn that Jekyll and Hyde were both in love with the same woman, but when she chose Hyde, Jekyll was the one to push her out of a window. Worse still, he blamed the whole thing on Hyde.

Their final grudge match ends up with Jekyll dead, which conveniently kills off Hyde too — though now we’re kind of bummed about it since he wasn’t all that bad as it turns out.

This revelation means bad things for Regina (Lana Parrilla), who will now have to battle her dark side literally and metaphorically.

If Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and the rest of the heroes want the Evil Queen gone, they’ll have to kill Regina to do it. Normally, that option would be completely out of the question, but with Emma’s daunting vision of her own death hanging over her head, not to mention Regina’s plea that she’d do what’s necessary if push comes to shove, it seems like Emma’s life isn’t the only one hanging in the balance here.

Meanwhile, Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) and Belle (Emilie de Ravin) are off the rails again, and it’s not seeming like there’s anything that can mend the fence between this fairytale couple.

Rumple might seem convinced Belle will come back to him out of necessity, when his various enemies come hunting for his child, but we’re less sure. Belle has been royally pissed at Rumple —  we can’t really remember the reason, at this point — and every decision he makes seems to cement that anger and unhappiness.

Even if she does come calling for his help one day, we’re not sure it will lead to a heartfelt reconciliation as much as a grudging request for protection.
