Remembering Peter Vaughan & why his ‘GoT’ role should not be overlooked

Peter Vaughan, best known for his time on the British sitcom “Porridge” and his role of Maester Aemon Targaryen on “Game of Thrones” passed “peacefully in his sleep” at the age of 93, says his agent Sally Long-Innes.

If you don’t remember Maester Aemon, it’s probably because he starred in a total of eight episodes throughout the entire series — but he served a pretty important role in storylines yet to come.

As the Maester of Castle Black, Aemon predominantly interacted with Jon Snow and The Night’s Watch, acting as an advisor to the men guarding the wall.

As the last living Targaryen in Westeros (if you don’t count Daenerys across the sea), he died in Season 5 after giving Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) some words of wisdom about being Lord Commander of The Night’s Watch. You might also remember that he cast the deciding vote in Jon Snow’s favor during the election that took place after the previous Lord Commander was killed.

Additionally, there were several moments between Aemon and Jon that seemed to hint Jon was actually a secret Targaryen, a theory that has yet to be proved but was given greater weight in Season 6.

“I’ve been so lucky with parts,” Vaughan recently told BBC Radio Surrey. “They talk about actors resting. The only time I have ever rested in my 77 years as an actor has been when I’ve wanted to. Lucky, lucky, lucky.”

“Game of Thrones” is set to return in the summer of 2017.
