‘Star Wars’ Spin-Off Movies: Boba Fett and Han Solo Get Stand-Alone Properties
Are you sick of “Star Wars” news yet? I hope not, because Entertainment Weekly just confirmed some big stuff. In addition to the J.J. Abrams-directed “Episode VII,” EW reports that Disney is planning spin-off films for two of the franchise’s most beloved characters, Han Solo and Boba Fett.
According to EW, the Han Solo movie would focus on the smuggler’s origin story and “would take place in the time period between ‘Revenge of the Sith’ and the first ‘Star Wars.'” As for the Boba Fett film, that “would take place either between ‘A New Hope’ and ‘The Empire Strikes Back,’ or between ‘Empire’ and ‘Jedi,’ where the bounty hunter was last seen plunging unceremoniously into a sarlacc pit.” These timelines would even allow Disney to bring back both Darth Vader and Jabba the Hut. However, EW also notes that the projects are in an early development phase, and that “the deal could be altered further.”
Yesterday, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that writers Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg would be “working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga,” but did not elaborate any further. Kasdan co-wrote 1980’s “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.” Kinberg is writing the sequel to “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”
This news comes two days after Harry Knowles of Ain’t It Cool News reported that a Yoda spin-off was in the works. While that has not yet been confirmed, EW’s Anthony Breznican — who broke the Fett/Solo story — tweeted that this announcement does not negate the potential for a Yoda movie.
“Star Wars Episode VII” has been scheduled for a 2015 release date. No word on release dates for the spin-off films. For more on this story, head to Entertainment Weekly.
