'Stranger Things' Season Two Will Be Inspired By These Movies
One of summer’s biggest hits didn’t play in movie theaters, even though much of its more memorable moments were throwbacks to a time when the films playing in theaters ruled your imagination. Instead, the 8-episode Stranger Things premiered on Netflix, and its rich, inventive nod to classic ’80s movies hit our nostalgia-lovin’ sweet spot — enough to earn it a second season, announced this week, which will hit Netflix in 2017.
Here’s a teaser announcement that also reveals the titles of next season’s nine episodes.

There are some clues in there for those who love seeking out all the little nods to ’80s movies that are stuffed in this show, including the title of episode one, MadMax, as well as the end part that reveals the second season will take place in the fall of 1984. That means it’ll be set right after films like Ghostbusters, Gremlins, The Karate Kid, The Natural and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom first hit theaters.
In fact, show creators the Duffer brothers have cited Temple of Doom as being a big influence on season two, along with James Cameron-directed sequels Terminator 2 and Aliens.
“I guess a lot of this is James Cameron,” Matt Duffer told EW. “But he’s brilliant. And I think one of the reasons his sequels are as successful as they are is he makes them feel very different without losing what we loved about the original. So I think we kinda looked to him and what he does and tried to capture a little bit of the magic of his work.”
Hit up EW for more on what to expect in season 2, and let is know what movies you hope they pay homage to when Stranger Things returns next year. While we wait, here’s a list of films we put together to check our after you’ve watched season one of the show.
