‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Trailer: Back Where it All Began

The first trailer for next summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man is now online, and at two-and-a-half-minutes surprisingly it doesn’t reveal too much. You could probably call this the “Origin Trailer”, as it briefly tracks an emotionally distant Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) through the accidental spider bite that gives him superpowers and turns him into Spider-Man. The best part of the trailer comes at the end, though, as it segues from Parker experimenting with his powers sans costume to a full-on, skyscraper-to-skyscraper joyride from the POV of Spider-Man (how awesome will that look in 3D?), eventually ending with a brief peek at the Marvel hero we all know and love.

The differences between this film and Sam Raimi’s original trilogy aren’t as obvious in this first trailer, though The Amazing Spider-Man will flashback to Parker as a kid with his parents, and it looks to spend quite a bit of time exploring Parker’s internal pain and his loss of belonging. We get a tiny bit of Emma Stone (as Gwen Stacy) and Rhys Ifans (as Dr. Curt Connor, aka The Lizard), though don’t expect to see any villainous transformations from the latter just yet. While this trailer is long for a debut, it wisely gives up nothing except for an origin story we’re already familiar with.

Definitely a solid start, and the film appears to be having a creative blast with the 3D technology. What did you think? Are you bummed about having to go through another Spider-Man origin story, or do you feel this looks different enough that it doesn’t matter which story aspects we’re already familiar with?

Watch the trailer below. The Amazing Spider-Man arrives in theaters on July 3rd, 2012.

NOTE: Sorry folks, we thought this was an official version because of the HD quality. Apparently it is not. When the official version arrives, we will embed it here.
