The Best Movie Trailers of the Week: ‘My Life Directed,’ ‘Welcome to Me’ and More

Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week.

Welcome to Me

I’ll watch anything starring Kristen Wiig, but this new trailer for Welcome to Me sells Wiig’s character as a particularly unique woman who winds up in an especially curious, amusing and mildly relevant situation. It doesn’t seem like that big of a stretch for a lottery winner to buy her own show and thanks to Wiig’s natural charm, the piece leaves you hoping Alice Klieg defies the odds, doesn’t waste a good chunk of her winnings on nothing and actually manages to become an unlikely but successful talk show host.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Mad Max does it again! Even though we’ve already seen a good deal of the footage featured in this new Mad Max: Fury Road international trailer, it’s still especially entertaining. Max is “a man of action and a man of few words” and those qualities are working insanely well for the film’s marketing campaign. It’s still tough to tell whether or not the full feature will actually have a deep, meaningful narrative at the core, but at this point, it’s pretty much a guarantee the film will be packed with so many fascinating characters and explosive action sequences that it’ll be a mesmerizing thrill regardless.

My Life Directed

If you’re interested in what goes down behind the scenes while making a movie, you’ve got to check out this trailer for My Life Directed, a documentary shot by Liv Corfixen that covers director Nicolas Winding Refn’s experience making Only God Forgives and then taking it to Cannes for a world premiere. Based on the material in this promo, it really does feel like a very open, heartfelt all-access look at the intense challenges a director faces, even one as accomplished as Refn, while bringing ideas to screen.

Maps to the Stars

There’s a lot going on in Maps to the Stars. It’s got genuine drama, fun satire, a good deal of hostility, and loads of seriously eccentric and horrific behavior. You definitely can’t cram it all into one brief promo, but this new red band trailer comes pretty close by running with a rip-roaring, somewhat madcap montage format that’s brimming with striking imagery and spot-on comedic timing.
