Don’t mess with Texas or The Kennedys!

The Hollywood Reporter cites loose-lipped insiders who are dishing that it was power of The Kennedy Clan — namely former First Daughter Caroline Kennedy and former California First Lady Maria Shriver — who helped bring down a controversial History Channel miniseries starring Greg Kinnear as John F. Kennedy and Katie Holmes as Jacqueline Kennedy.

On Friday, A&E — parent network of The History Channel — abruptly pulled the plug on the eight-part television event that would have been the network’s first miniseries. At the time, A&E remarked that while the film was a formidable effort, its controversial content was “not a fit” for the network. The series promised a no-holds-barred account of patriarch Joseph Kennedy and his sons John and Robert’s presidential ambitions — and plenty of whoring, boozing, and drug use.

Not exactly a family program.

“While the film is produced and acted with the highest quality, after viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand.”

That kind of rhetoric didn’t sit well with Kennedy descendents like Maria and Caroline, who reportedly leaned on A&E until the network agreed to drop the program. Caroline — who has a book deal with History Channel co-owner Disney — even hinted that she would pull her support of an upcoming a collection of previously unreleased interviews with her late mom, hitting shelves just in time for the 50th anniversary of the first year of JFK’s presidency this fall.

The Kennedys is still scheduled to air in Canada on March 6.
