‘The Vampire Diaries’: 6 characters who MUST return before the series finale

When “The Vampire Diaries” returns in January, we’ll only have nine episodes left before we bid adieu to The CW’s iconic teen vampire drama.

While most fans are preoccupied with endgames, weddings and resurrections, we’re more focused on who we will and won’t see again before our time is up. Over the years, “The Vampire Diaries” has had some pretty fantastic characters come and go, and we’re dying to see a few of them make reappearances in the show’s final season.

Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) we can already check off the list — but there are still a few people who could (and should) make the return trip to Mystic Falls this season. Let’s just hope they fare better than Tyler did…

1. Jeremy Gilbert

Jeremy (Stephen R. McQueen) is probably too busy hunting and killing anything and everything that goes bump in the night, but we hope he swings by his home town for an episode or two this year. Maybe he’ll even live long enough to see his sister wake up?

2. Aunt Jenna

Speaking of Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) family members, there’s got to be some small way we can get Jenna (Sara Canning) back. We’ll take a hallucination at this point, we just miss Elena and Jeremy’s super cool aunt. Bonus points if the show resurrects her to finally give Alaric his happy ending.

3. The Originals

At this point, we’re not picky about which Original visits Mystic Falls. We’ll take a cameo from any and all of the Original siblings just for one last shot at a crossover. Right now, most of them are out of commission, but who’s to say “The Vampire Diaries” won’t give us a “where are they now” ending montage? The great thing about all of your characters being immortal is that you could literally skip a century and still play it off like it’s no big deal.

4. Kai Parker

Kai (Chris Wood) was so wickedly wonderful in “The Vampire Diaries” sixth season! We want him back just so we can get more of his snark and evil smirks. And maybe so he can wake Elena up. Lucky for us, Chris Wood has been spotted in Atlanta recently — so maybe we’ll get to see Kai again after all?

5. Elena Gilbert

This one is obvious. If Elena doesn’t wake up from her eternal slumber in the series finale, we honestly don’t know what we’ll do with ourselves. Elena’s reunion with her friends — those still alive all those years from now, and of course Damon (Ian Somerhalder) — is something fans have been waiting for since Nina Dobrev left the show after Season 6. The closer we get to the end, the more our Delena-senses start tingling…

6. Katherine

Now we’re just being greedy, but if Nina Dobrev comes back to play Elena, we’ll use every bribery tactic we’ve got for “The Vampire Diaries” writers to give us a farewell scene for Katherine. This whole season has been about hell, after all, so why not bring Katherine and her killer curls back?

“The Vampire Diaries” returns Jan. 13, 2017 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
