‘The Voice’s’ Cole Vosbury on Christina Aguilera: ‘Anytime she looks at me, I’m happy’

On Monday’s (Nov. 25) episode of “The Voice,” Cole Vosbury scored big by going small with an intimate rendition of Vince Gill’s “I Still Believe In You.” Though he belongs to a competing team, the Team Blake member earned some effusive praise from the show’s reigning diva, Christina Aguilera.

Following the stirring performance, which coach Blake Shelton wisely chose to pare down to simple guitar and strings instrumentation, Aguilera gushed about Vosbury’s quiet moment and the clarity it provided in terms of his remarkable talent.

Speaking backstage with Zap2it after the show, the singer opened up about just what that praise meant to him. “Anytime Christina says anything good about me, anytime she looks at me, I’m happy,” Vosbury teases, adding, “I catch her eye every now and then when I’m singing and it motivates me to sing better just knowing that she’s sitting there watching me, you know? I mean, no, she’s a sweetheart and everything she says, I really love.”

Though a member of Shelton’s team, this was the first time Vosbury had taken a pure country song, something he didn’t take lightly. “I just thought about how many country fans love this show, but they’re not getting country from anywhere and I said, ‘Well, somebody needs to bring it to them.’ So I was honored to get to do that and honored that Blake trusted me with a country song,” he admits. “He knows how country fans are. They’re real picky about who’s doing their songs and I was like, ‘Ah, I’ve done Miguel. Like, are they gonna accept me?’ And I still don’t know if they have because it’s only been, like, 30 minutes since the show. Hopefully they have though. But Blake was full of praise, as he always is, so hopefully I made him proud and made his fans proud.”

With the range of genres he’s already tackled throughout Season 5 in mind, Vosbury admits he’s not sure which he’d like to take on next. “I don’t know what’s left. I guess I’ll do a Tupac song,” he jokes. “I don’t know. I might throwback again and do some old school classic rock or something like that. I don’t know. I want to see what Blake has in mind because now, if I progress past tomorrow, we get to do two songs, my pick and his pick, and I’m feeling like he’ll probably want me to do country again. I know he loves it and I think he was happy with what I did tonight. He came up to me afterwards and was like, ‘Yeah man, you’re gonna be a country star!’ … So, we’ll see. We’ll see how it goes.”

“The Voice” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET and Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
