This ‘Vampire Diaries’ wedding is going to have the perfect maid of honor — from hel…

Hallelujah! On Friday night (Feb. 24), the seemingly impenetrable Cade (Wole Parks) finally shuffles off.

Thanks to a death-defying, combination effort between Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Bonnie (Kat Graham), the Devil has finally been laid to rest… Or so it appears. The episode is titled “It’s Been a Hell of a Ride” — and between Cade and his sirens, it’s been an exhausting one. As Cade finally self-immolates, it seems like the perfect time for everyone in Mystic Falls to finally take a breath…

But it turns out, they’ve all been duped.

After Kai (Chris Wood) once again tries in vain to kill Alaric (Matt Davis) and Caroline (Candice King)’s twin girls — and once again proving he’s nothing but an insane murder — Bonnie chains Kai (Chris Wood) to a chair. Since hell’s been destroyed, she’s created a personal one just for him!  Locked up with “Two Princes” by the Spin Doctors playing on repeat would indeed be an awful place to spend the rest of eternity — but instead of begging for forgiveness, or trying to barter with Bonnie, Kai laughs. Now that Cade’s dead, someone much, much worse will be coming to Mystic Falls for revenge: Katherine Pierce (Nina Dobrev).

“The myth, the legend, the baddest bitch of all,” Kai gloats. Even though his future in hell looks grim, Kai is giddy knowing Katherine will finish up whatever mayhem he couldn’t accomplish. Merely hearing Katherine’s name leaves Bonnie shaking, and when she tells Damon this latest thing, he all but winks into the camera: “We’re toast,” he smirks, and he should know: No one can manipulate or create the chaos to Mystic Falls quite like Katherine.

While we want to be excited for the on-again, off-again, on-now Stefan and Caroline, their upcoming wedding will not be a day to celebrate their love. It looks like a carefully orchestrated ploy to lure Katherine back to town, so they can finally finish her off. We thought Katherine was long dead, but it turns out she’s been kicking around in hell — and making friends the entire time.

Katherine’s return is ominous, but so is Caroline and Stefan’s reunion. Come on, Caroline. “No! Say, no!” we shouted at the TV as Stefan proposed yet again. He has put her through the wringer — and ok, maybe because we got all excited at the thought of Klaus (Joseph Morgan) returning — that Steroline chemistry just feels like it’s hit an awkward place. The way Caroline actually sighs before saying yes, we almost feel like she’s pity marrying him: What’s the harm in being with a human Stefan for the next maybe 50 years when you’ve got eternity to spend on whatever you want?

In other things that make you go hmmm: Alaric’s plan to help the twins learn to control their Gemini coven powers, which now involves starting up a school for child witches, with Caroline’s help. The way he describes it, we’re reminded of another famous institution: Derek Zoolander’s School for Kids Who Can’t Read Good. Is this going to be a school for two? That’s called homeschool. Aren’t Lizzie and Sophie the last of the Gemini coven? Isn’t that why Kai wanted to kill them? Or is the assumption that there are other kids with magical powers that nobody’s mentioned before?

There are still a lot of questions to answer, and with only two episodes left — aside from ridiculous Alaric’s ridiculous school idea — we’re excited to see how things start to close out for everyone. Stefan and Caroline’s wedding is going to be a horrific disaster, but it will also finally bring about Dobrev’s highly anticipated return. It’s not the beautifully innocent and compassionate Elena we’ve all been expecting to see, but it’s absolutely going to rock.

“The Vampire Diaries” airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. Only one more episode remains until the series finale on Mar. 10.
