TV Query: Is Lifetime’s ‘Girl in the Box’ based on a true story?

Lifetime’s latest movie, “Girl in the Box,” depicts the story of a young girl taken hostage and her subsequent abuse and imprisonment inside a small box in 1977.

The film is based on the true story of Colleen Stan and her abduction by Cameron and Janice Hooker for seven years in Reb Bluff, Calif. Stan was kidnapped off the highway while hitchhiking when she was 20 years old, and spent almost all of her days in a small box.

She spent the next seven years being mentally and sexually tortured, but Stan escaped in 1984 after being given enough freedom to run away from the Hookers.

Cameron Hooker was put on trial for sexual assault and kidnapping, and his wife Janice testified against him in exchange for immunity. Hooker is currently serving a 104-year sentence.

As for the Lifetime movie, Stan tells People she hasn’t seen it yet, but she did spend time on set observing filming.

“I got to actually meet the main actors,” Stan says. “I also got to meet Addison Timlin, the little lady that played me, and Zane Holtz, the guy that played Cameron … I met him and I said, ‘Hon, somebody had to play him.’ I said, ‘I feel bad for you that you had to play this guy.’”

“Girl in the Box” premieres Saturday, Sept. 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime.
