In an unprecedented goof, the 89th Academy Awards ended on an awkward note, as presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway accidentally read off the wrong name for Best Picture, giving the award to “La La Land” instead of “Moonlight.”
After “La La Land” was announced as the winner of Hollywood’s most coveted award, the cast and production team came up on stage give their speeches — only to find out that they weren’t winners after all. It only took a few moments before “La La Land” producer Jordan Horowitz looked down at the envelope and realized the real winner was “Moonlight.”
We’re betting Steve Harvey is feeling pretty good about himself right now…

The mixup occurred thanks to the wrong envelope being handed to the presenters. According to the on-stage clarification, the envelope handed to Beatty and Dunaway held Emma Stone’s Best Actress card instead of the Best Picture winner. First, Beatty went to read the winner and was visibly shook, handing the card to Dunaway who announced the wrong winner, through no fault of her own, since the card she was holding said “La La Land.”
As it turns out, what everyone thought was a pretty un-funny suspenseful pause before the Best Picture announcement on Beatty’s part turned out to be a moment of serious confusion. Poor guy! “Warren, what did you do?!?” host Jimmy Kimmel joked while the veteran actor was explaining what went wrong.
Props to Horowitz for being so gracious and benevolent while handing his Oscar (and the envelope) over to the “Moonlight” team. We can’t say we’d have been that mature about it in the moment.
While “La La Land” seemed to dominate the Oscars this year, “Moonlight” pulled in a substantial amount of awards too, winning Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay. “La La Land” won Best Actress, Best Director, Best Original Music Score, Best Original Song, Best Cinematography and Best Production Design.
