If you followed the production of X-Men: Apocalypse, chances are you expected a lot more out of the young mutants’ trip to the mall and in particular a more significant role for Jubilee (Lana Condor). Instead we merely heard they were going and then we saw them exiting a screening of Return of the Jedi, retained likely just because of a joke made at the expense of X-Men: The Last Stand.
Well, now you can watch the entire sequence with Jubilee, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Ty Sheridan) and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee). There’s some nice ’80s nostalgia for arcades, records, breakdancing, and the fitness craze. Plus we get to actually see Jubilee’s powers at work, and in a criminal way. And there’s another nice inside joke about Turner looking like Boy George.
It’s a fun little sequence that injects a bit of brightness into an otherwise dark and cold movie. Even tightened up, it surely would have felt ill-fitting in X-Men: Apocalypse, especially since immediately after is the other fun sequence with Quicksilver saving everyone from the exploding mansion. Compiled off on their own, though, the mall scenes now get to just be a vignette off to the side.
One thing about the sequence that also might have seemed inconsistent and could have used more address is how the odd foursome of outsiders could hang out in a mall and not be a big deal, even with one of them being blue-skinned with a tail. The racial comparison part between Nightcrawler and the little African-American boy might have been too much, though.
You can probably see the sequence again in full on the X-Men: Apocalypse DVD and Blu-ray, which will be released on October 4.
