Which Sundance 2014 Movies Are You Now Most Anxious to See?

In theory, the movies that I’m most anticipating based on the buzz out of Sundance should be those with the highest praises. That can be dangerous, though, as festival hype can easily lead to expectations that are impossible to meet. At the same time, I am way too curious about Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, which is being called nothing short of “a masterpiece,” to not be at least very curious.

I realize there has to be something to it more than the gimmick of it being filmed over 12 years in order to follow its characters as they age right before our eyes. I’ve seen that plenty in docs like the Up series, American Promise and to a smaller degree current Slamdance selection Sometimes I Dream I’m Flying.

Then there’s Whiplash, which seems to still be the favorite for many fest attendees nearly a week after its debut. Neither the premise nor the cast is particularly calling my name, but I do like movies about drummers and typically Movies.com Managing Editor Erik Davis doesn’t steer me wrong with Sundance movies he recommends.

Others in the narrative sections that I hear good things about include The Voices, Love Is Strange, Listen Up Philip, The Raid 2, The Skeleton Twins, Frank and Obvious Child, which I’m still dying to see in spite of too many comparisons to Girls and Frances Ha. 

Unfortunately, I’m not getting a good sense of any standouts in the documentary programs other than opening-night feature The Green Prince and the hybrid Nick Cave film 20,000 Days on Earth. I guess I’m looking forward to rewatching Life Itself, which I think is a perfect biography of Roger Ebert.
