One holiday shopper’s soundtrack is another’s kryptonite: “Last Christmas,” British pop group Wham!’s hit 1984 single about unrequited love during the holidays, has been annointed the Most Annoying Christmas Song of All-Time in a poll of Bulgarian music lovers.
And you thought nothing could be worse than “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer!”
A total of 28,110 Bulgarians branded Wham’s festive contribution as the song they least wanted to hear this year in a ballot sponsored by NoHoHoHo.org. The single even beat out Mariah Carey’s 1994 charttopper “All I Want for Christmas.”
“Every song gets disgusting when you hear it for the 172,395th time,” one voter, Bambi, commented.
“I think these songs are the reason for Christmas depressions and suicides,” added another pollster, Yordan Stamenov.
Of course, not everyone would agree: Just last week, “Last Christmas” was named the Most Played Holiday Track of the Last Five Year by The Performing Right Society, a company that collects royalties for musicians and composers. The 26-year-old hit by the pop band, formed in 1981 by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, has been the most aired tune of the festive season of the last five years.
Also bagging significant positions in their chart of seasonal songs was Band Aid’s 1984 recording “Do They Know It’’s Christmas?” — which landed at No. 2.
