Considering the juice fasts and plastic surgery some celebrities endure before awards shows, Rebel Wilson’s preparations are pretty low-key.
“I was joking before to do two sit-ups a day to get in good physical shape,” the host of the 2013 MTV Movie Awards, airing Sunday, April 14, tells Zap2it.
Wilson, who played Fat Amy in “Pitch Perfect” (for which she’s nominated for best female performance and breakthrough performance), was working on reuniting the women from that movie to sing at the awards.
“It would be the first time we have sung together as a group since we have filmed in Louisiana,” she says. “It would be pretty epic. It is looking good. Everyone is very busy. We all get on so well. I had my birthday party recently, and all of the girls came.”
As with any live show, performers are subject to change, and many contracts had not been finalized as of this writing. However, what seems fairly certain for the show, broadcast in 35 languages around the world, is that Selena Gomez will sing her new single “Come and Get It.” Macklemore and Ryan Lewis will also perform.
Emma Watson will be presented with the second Trailblazer Award, which Emma Stone received last year, and Will Ferrell is receiving the show’s inaugural Comedic Genius Award.
The awards show is trying a new approach.
“It is developing into a live stage show and incorporates movie kind of stuff,” Wilson says. “I am writing the whole show, too.”
For the past six years, it was at Universal Studio’s Gibson Amphitheater. Sunday’s live show is from a soundstage on the Sony Studio Lot in Culver City, and a set is being built.
Executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic describes the MTV Movie Awards — now in their 22nd year — as “the opposite of the Oscars.” He even plans to clock in at the two hours allotted.
Usually these awards are held after Memorial Day but were moved earlier to coincide with the kickoff of summer blockbusters, which start debuting in May.
“As we are acknowledging the work of this year, we are also looking to this summer,” Ignjatovic says. “Let’s be the first summer blockbuster and be ahead of all the summer blockbusters.”
What makes the MTV awards more fun are the quirky categories, including best kiss. This year introduces best shirtless performance, and the nominees are: Channing Tatum (“Magic Mike”), Christian Bale (“The Dark Knight Rises”), Daniel Craig (“Skyfall”), Seth MacFarlane (“Ted”) and Taylor Lautner (“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2”).
Incidentally, “Ted” racked up seven nominations, quite a feat for a foulmouthed, beer-swigging teddy bear. MacFarlane wrote, directed and voiced “Ted.” It’s up for movie of the year, best on-screen duo (with Mark Wahlberg), best shirtless performance (Ted in a bubble bath on his cellphone is a vision), best WTF moment, best female performance (Mila Kunis), best kiss (Kunis and Wahlberg) and best fight.
As far as fight scenes go, though, it will be tough to beat Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner versus Tom Hiddleston from “Marvel’s the Avengers.”
Hiddleston, also up for best villain, is thrilled.
“I am over the moon,” Hiddleston says. “I was thinking about it when they announced it. I am in the category with amazing actors, and to be considered in the same breath with these actors is amazing any way you slice it.”
As the vicious Loki, intent on world domination, Hiddleston is up against Javier Bardem (“Skyfall”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“Django Unchained”), Marion Cotillard and Tom Hardy (both from “The Dark Knight Rises”).
“It feels like in some certain circles it is unfashionable to conceive of (‘Marvel’s the Avengers’) as a piece of real work,” Hiddleston says. “I worked on it for 79 days over the summer of 2011, and I am so immensely proud of it because I think it is purely entertaining.
“In our modern era, there are almost two roads that diverge at a crossroads, and one is the utter cinema, usually auteur-driven and serious, and then there is almost entertaining movies where everybody goes as a family and has a good time,” Hiddleston continues. “And the idea that ‘The Avengers’ had some recognition is a source of great pride.”
Hiddleston is also excited about the star power at the awards show and hopes to meet Bardem. Wilson has already met her celebrity crush, Tatum, who did the promos for the show with her.
“He is No. 1,” she says, “my A-list man to rope into doing something, and then he came for a day and shot stuff when he was in town for the Oscars. Some people you know because you meet at parties. I had never met him before.”
“It is a really cool awards,” Wilson says of the show, “and not stuffy and a bit more relaxed.”
And with that, she was returning to writing the show, which is far better prep than doing one more sit-up.
