Every week of How to Get Away With Murder that goes by without revealing your favorite character is safe is just as stressful for the stars of the show as it is for you.
E! News spoke with Karla Souza about her big week three episode, which—spoiler alert! No, really, we’re going to spoil the episode now if you haven’t watched it—did NOT end with Laurel being revealed as safe.
“I know, trust me! I want it as badly as you,” Souza tells us. But despite the fact that Bonnie was the latest person to be eliminated as the victim on the gurney, that doesn’t actually mean that anyone is safe or unsafe. “The night is long. Whoever you or I think is safe is not [necessarily safe]. Playing with the time—they’re teasing us, and me included.”
Here’s what we do know—Laurel made a very difficult visit to her father in order to locate Frank. The fact that she goes to see “the one person she hates the most, speaks to one, how desperate she is to find Frank, and two, how much she does for Annalise. It’ll maybe come up later that she hates doing these things,” Souza says, but “even though she hates them, she still does them.”
We learned a lot about Laurel’s complicated family history—including the fact that she was kidnapped as a teenager and her father refused to pay the ransom, and also that Laurel’s dad left her mother in the middle of a mental health crisis. Knowing these things, “it makes sense because Laurel has always been the savvy, one-step-ahead caretaker of all of the Keating Five.”
One last thing—we saw that Meggie, Wes’ new girlfriend, is becoming suspicious of his relationship with Laurel, and frankly, so are we. “Meggie’s not stupid, and seeing how Wes and Laurel communicate and share and have a deep connection, no matter how much she tries she’ll never be able to [replicate that],” Souza explains.
“They murdered someone together! They’re bonded by blood in a very literal sense. I think that no matter how much they try to pretend to be normal and to forget about that, that comes and haunts him again and again. Whether that’s going to bring Laurel and Wes together or if it’s going to push them apart is something that the writers have played around with and I think it’s something that the fans are going to really like.”
How to Get Away With Murder airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. on ABC.
