Two of the most anticipated comic book movies — actually, two of the most anticipated movies, period — are Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman, each of them the first solo installment for a female superhero from their respective publisher-based studio. We’ve got the latest on both, which you can read about below. 

Captain Marvel is an Origin Story 

Despite claims a couple years ago that Marvel would stop doing origin stories, it appears Captain Marvel will in fact be one. According to the rumor at the time, Doctor Strange was to be the first MCU installment without the traditional character set-up. We now know that to be false, and Kevin Feige acknowledges such alongside confirmation about Captain Marvel in a statement made to press this week (see below, via The Playlist). He also, however, comments on Black Panther being a little different.

“Benedict [Cumberbatch] is an amazing actor and totally different than Hemsworth and totally different from Downey. And, we want to stay true to who he was in the books. The metamorphosis of what he goes through is more drastic than Tony [Stark] and that was fun to chart. I guess Black Panther isn’t really an origin story since we saw him already in Civil War, but his stand alone certainly introduces you to 99% of his world which you never saw before. And Captain Marvel is certainly an origin story from the start.”

We can presume that if Captain Marvel’s origins are being depicted in her own movie, due out on March 8, 2019, then she won’t be appearing in Avengers: Infinity War, which comes out almost a year prior on May 4, 2018. 

Wonder Woman is a Simple Story 

One of the issues people have with the DC Extended Universe so far is that the movies’ plots are unnecessarily complicated. When that happens, there’s more to pick apart regarding storylines that go nowhere and plot holes that don’t make any sense. Well, here’s another reason to look forward to Wonder Woman as the next hope for the franchise: it’s going to be very simple. That may seem strange considering it’s set during World War I, one of the most complex conflicts in history, but star Gal Gadot explains to Variety:

“For [director Patty Jenkins] it was very important to not just portray her as a goddess, but to tell a very simple story of someone who believes in good and believes that people should be happy and lead safe, happy lives. We cared a lot about simplifying Wonder Woman’s agenda, because it is simple. It was her heart that we cared about, not her being this warrior. When you tell a story from the heart, all of us can relate, because all of us want to live in a safe, quiet, and peaceful world.”

Gadot also explains in the same interview why Jenkins was the right director for the job: 

“I don’t think it’s a gender kind of thing. Maybe because we’re telling a story of a girl growing up and becoming a woman, it’s easier for it to be told by someone who was once a girl and became a woman. I feel like Patty Jenkins was the right person for the movie because she was the right person for the movie. She knew exactly how she wanted to tell her story. She knew exactly what she wanted to get. She’s brilliant and smart and so passionate.”

Wonder Woman hits theaters on June 2, 2017.
