A ‘Supernatural’ war between hunters isn’t the best idea — but it’s exactly what Luc…

We’ve been speculating a lot on Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean’s (Jensen Ackles) pending partnership with the British Men of Letters. Can this team-up work? In a word: No.

“The British Invasion” (April 6) reinforces the differences in strategy between our American hunters and the BMoL. But an accidental murder sets the stage for an all-out war between the factions. And the last thing the Winchesters need is another threat to worry about…

All it takes is one measly mistake by Sam and Dean’s hunter friend Eileen Leahey (Shoshannah Stern) accidentally shooting a British Men of Letters man instead of Dagon, the Prince of Hell (Ali Ahn). Everything unravels from there.

The BMoL live by a strict code, and one of its rules assigns death to anyone who kills a member of their elite squad. Sam and Dean’s new buddy Mick (Adam Fergus) almost follows through… But he’s been going through a profound identity crisis recently and decides to do the right thing, letting Leahey go.

We must commend Mick for the growth he’s shown, this is obviously a huge step. Through multiple flashbacks, “The British Invasion” gives us a peek into his upbringing within the Kendricks Academy. By the looks of things, it was anything but kind: At a young age, he was forced to stab his best friend to death to prove his allegiance to the British establishment.

Like everyone he works with, Mick was designed by indoctrination and trauma.

Unfortunately for Mick, this breakthrough seals his fate — and the BMoL’s resident psycho Mr. Ketch (David Haydn-Jones) ends up putting a bullet in the back of the man’s skull. We’re afraid to see how Sam and Dean will react to this news — the boys have always had a tough time making (and keeping) new friends.

One thing is for sure: A war is coming for the Winchesters. “Assimilate or eliminate” is just a tiny portion of the British Men of Letters code, and serves as our introduction to the group’s leader, the imposing Dr. Hess: As she passes these words down to the late Mr. Davies, it’s clear that she doesn’t mince words, ever. The mission to onboard the American hunters abandoned, a new directive is handed to Mr. Ketch: Destroy the Winchesters.

Not only will this complicate things for Sam and Dean, we’re sure Mary (Samantha Smith) will have her own complex emotions to work out as well. After all, Thursday’s episode found her in bed with Ketch…

This whole mess just got a lot messier — and if there’s one person who thrives well in such a fiasco, it’s Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino). He’s got a baby on the way, and it’s obvious Crowley (Mark Sheppard) can’t keep him locked away in Hell for long.

The hunters all want the same thing — to kill this Nephilim before it destroys all of humanity — and so the fight between the British Men of Letters and the Winchesters won’t help anyone except Lucifer. It’s the exact distraction he needs to retake his throne — and with fatherhood looming, the Devil is sure to do whatever it takes to make that happen.

“Supernatural” Season 12 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
