Carey Mulligan is featured on the cover of the October issue Vogue, and has even been nominated for an Oscar, but apparently the star’s still not famous enough to appear on Glee.

Ever since her breakout role in 2009’s An Education, Carey Mulligan has emerged as Hollywood’s newest indie darling. The sophisticated fashionista even earned a Best Actress Emmy nomination for her portrayal of a sixties schoolgirl growing up in Mod-era London.

But there’s one gig that even Carey’s chic sense of style and cute pixie haircut can’t land her — a guest spot on one of television’s hottest shows. The fiesty and fiercely private starlet says she was taken aback when she was turned down for a role on FOX’s smash musical comedy because she is not well-known enough outside of the UK.

The British actress — who co-stars with boyfriend Shia LeBeouf and Oscar winner Michael Douglas in the new movie Wall Street 2 — tells Vogue she was flat out turned down by the creators of Glee when she asked to be on the show, which has featured a slew of stars including Neil Patrick Harris, Olivia Newton-John, and Idina Menzel.

“I really wanted to be in ‘Glee,’” she says. “I did ask about it, but I was told I wasn’t famous enough to have a cameo.”

Still, in the grand scheme of things, Carey reckons being “not famous enough” ain’t half bad.

“I don’t want to be ‘known.’ I’m afraid of being a ‘personality.’ On a talk show I feel I should just hold up a sign with the facts on it and leave. It wouldn’t take more than a minute, and they’d have room for other guests. I want people to not recognize me, to think I’m a different actress, not remember me from what I did previously.”
