Cine Latino: Oscar Isaac, Bérénice Bejo, Sofía Vergara and more Spice it Up this Fall

Fall is finally here and with it comes a fruitful slate of movie releases. Here’s a glimpse of a few movies we hope might spice up your holiday season. If you’re looking for action check out Brazil’s latest hit Elite Squad: The Enemy Within out in theaters today. If you’re seeking more dramatic roles then look no further and enjoy Bérénice Bejo’s performance in The Artist, Oscar Isaac in Madonna’s W.E., Chico & Rita and Rodrigo Garcia’s Albert Nobbs.

Elite Squad: The Enemy Within

Brazilian director Jose Padiha takes us into one of the most dangerous places on earth in Elite Squad: The Enemy Within (Tropa de Elite 2). Living out of the straggling slums in Rio de Janeiro is the head of Rio’s Special Police Operations Battalion, Captain Nascimento (Wagner Moura). He’s accused of a massacre during a violent jail riot that ends in the death of a gang leader. But his biggest challenge comes when he must face his true enemies the dirty cops and corrupt politicians who really run the streets.

The Artist

Married to director Michel Hazanavicius, Argentinian born Bérénice Bejo costars with Jean Dujardin in The Artist. The silent film has been well received since Cannes this year with talks of a Best Picture Oscar nomination. Set in 1927 Hollywood, silent movie star George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) wonders if the arrival of talking pictures will cause him to fade into oblivion, he sparks a relationship with Peppy Miller (Bérénice Béjo) only to succumb to sorrow.

Cuban-Guatemalan actor Oscar Isaac is steadily building a name for himself, having just recently costarred in Drive with Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan. He’ll be appearing in Madonna’s second directorial film project W.E., a two-tiered romantic drama focusing on the affair between King Edward VIII and American divorcée Wallis Simpson and a contemporary romance between a married woman and a Russian security guard. The film will be released in Dec. for a one week Oscar run with a wide opening on Feb. 3.

New Year’s Eve

Sofía Vergara joins the A-list cast of New Year’s Eve written in the same vain as Valentine’s Day. Directed by Garry Marshall the film follows the lives of several couples and singles in New York as they intertwine over the course of New Year’s Eve.

Albert Nobbs

Colombian director Rodrigo García directs Academy Award nominee Glenn Close in Albert Nobbs. Close, who wrote the script, plays a woman passing as a man in order to work and survive in 19th century Ireland. Some thirty years after donning men’s clothing, she finds herself trapped in a prison of her own making. The film and Close are already Oscar favorites with possible nominations for Best Picture and Best Actress.

Chico & Rita

Chico & Rita has received international praise and thanks to Luma Films it will be released in December. No official date has been released. Set in Cuba 1948 the animated film follows the romantic relationship of a young piano player and a singer. Their musical and romantic journey isn’t easy as the both struggle to stay together and achieve individual success. Their tribulations continue over 60 years against the striking backdrops of Havana, New York, Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas.
