Cute as they are, Caitlin and Julian shouldn’t be the next ‘Flash’ romance

Unless you’ve been watching an entirely different show than the rest of us, you might have noticed some sparks between Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) and Julian (Tom Felton) on “The Flash.”

These two have been thrown together in a very cool way in Season 3, each having evil alter-egos who force them to do unspeakable things. Julian’s is Doctor Alchemy, Savitar’s robed minion, and Caitlin’s is Killer Frost, an icy-powered villainess. Thanks to this shared struggle — as well as a love of science, and similarly cold exteriors hiding a soft heart underneath — it seems inevitable that a romance will bloom between these two.

While that ‘ship would certainly be adorable (Killer Alchemy? Snowbert?), we’re actually kind of hoping these two don’t get together.

For one, Caitlin has already had a few romances on the show that haven’t exactly ended well. Her relationship with Ronnie (Robbie Amell) ended in heartbreak, not once, but twice, after the particle accelerator turned him into a meta — and then Barry’s (Grant Gustin) singularity issue finished him off. And who could forget her adorable — and then horrifying — romance with Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears), a.k.a Zoom? Poor Caitlin fell in love with a sweet, understanding speedster, only to find out he was actually a psychotic villain bent on world domination. Bummer.

Now that we’re faced with a third prospect for Caitlin’s romantic woes in as many seasons, we’re a little worn out.

On top of that, who’s to say Tom Felton is planning to stick around on “The Flash,” past this one season he signed on for? We’d love for Julian to become a permanent fixture on the team, but sadly we just don’t see that happening. In all likelihood, he’ll either be killed off or sent away from Central City when Season 3 comes to an end.

Watching Caitlin embark on another relationship only for it to end tragically 10 episodes later is a bit of a waste of subplot. We’d much rather watch Caitlin struggle with her powers and Killer Frost, and the tension between her and Team Flash as she gets closer and closer to losing control. And let’s not forget the vision Cisco (Carlos Valdes) had of Vibe and Killer Frost facing off in a match to the death.

When all is said and done, that’s the destination we’re most anxious to get to — not another swing and miss for Caitlin’s love life.

“The Flash” airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
