Yours, Mine and Ours

  • BALL/FONDA/JOHNSON/MATHESON/BO

Based on a true story and co-starring Van Johnson and Tom Bosley, Yours, Mine And Ours keeps the laughs coming in a “clean, wholesome family comedy” (Life). This population explosion occurs when widowed Navy nurse Helen North (Ball) meets handsome Naval officer and widower Frank Beardsley (Fonda). They have much in commontoo much in factshehas eight kids and he has ten, and when they tie the knot, anarchy reigns in the Beardsley-North merger. The opposing camps of step-siblings do all they can to sabotage each other and their parents’ union. But, through it all, mother lovingly cares for her “troops,” while father patiently coaches his coming-of-age kids in more delicate matters, and resentment soon gives way to respect and something bigger than anyone could have imagined!Predating The Brady Bunch by almost a decade, Yours, Mine, and Ours is a screwball comedy about the ultimate blended family. When the widow Helen North (Lucille Ball) marries the widower Frank Beardsley (Henry Fonda)

I bought this DVD but returned it before opening when I discovered it was pan and scan. Can’t understand why it’s not available in widescreen–every time the movie runs on Turner Classic Movies (it was shown, again, in the last month or so), it IS in widescreen. I agree with L. Shirley’s January 26, 2006 review: This film needs to be available in widescreen DVD. Also agreeing with L. Shirley and other reviewers … it’s a wonderful film.

I followed L. Shirley’s lead and gave only a 4-star rating, a reflection of the aforementioned unavailability in widescreen.

I have just added this movie to my list of favorite Lucy movies. Yours, Mine, and Ours is probably one of the funniest movies ever made by Lucille Ball. Lucy and Henry Fonda have such great chemistry onscreen. I laughed throughout the whole movie. Lucy’s drunk scene is pure classic-it’ll remind you of her ever-famous Vitameatavegemin scene. Lucy has not lost her touch at all-she never did. It’s always a delight to watch her make her hilarious magic happen, and this movie has plenty of magic. Imagine watching the Brady Bunch-times 10! Just think of all the side-splitting mishaps and pranks go along with it. Yours, Mine, and Ours is suitable for everyone-kids, teenagers, and adults. It’s that kind of sophisticated comedy that makes it enjoyable to any generation. This movie is a must-see for any Lucy fan!

YOURS,MINE AND OURS is a wacky comedy about the struggles of a second marriage for both a widow and widower who together have a combined total of eighteen children. The new family struggles mightily to become a unified whole which is finally achieved with the arrival of a new baby to whom everbody is related. This film serves as a fine example of how two great actors can lift a basically good movie to unexpected heights with outstanding performances. Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda are certainly well cast. Among the many fine child actors Tim Matheson manages to stand out.The film’s credibility is enhanced by the fact that it is based on a true story. The real life heroine, Helen Beardsley, died three years ago in California at age 70 of Parkinson’s disease.

This review refers to “Yours, Mine and Ours”(1968), DVD(MGM) edition.

The one thing I like about remakes(okay, there are a few good ones out there), is that they bring some renewed and well deserved attention to the original. Usually a classic. All of a sudden these oldies but goodies start appearing and are getting top billing at the video and discount stores. I understand that a remake with a more modern take will bring the story to a whole new(maybe even 2) generations, but this is Lucy Ball and Henry Fonda we are talking about, does it get any better?

So I was so happy to see this 1968 classic family film on DVD, and at such a reasonable price. The picture is sharp, colors are good. If you are REALLY looking for them, you will see some signs of age, but basically a wonderful transfer of this nearly 40 year old film…but MGM!…”modified to fit my screen”?(pan and scan), why’d you have to go and do that for. Couldn’t we at least have the choice as to whether we would like to view it as the director and cinematographer wanted us to see it? So that’s my reason for 4 stars, maybe another edition will come out in the original screen format. And while I’m on a rant about this DVD, why aren’t there any subtitles or captions in English for those who may need them to enjoy this wonderful film. There are however subtitles in French and Spanish and may also be viewed in those languages as well. All in Dolby Digital, and although in Mono(including the English), the sound is very good. The only features is a Trailer. Wouldn’t it have been nice to gather the child actors together to talk about working with the great ones?

The film is 5 stars in my book. It’s one that I love enough to buy this DVD(with all it’s faults), as I know that it will get viewed and enjoyed many times. For those that have never seen it(or the remake), it’s a charming, funny and poignant romantic comedy of a widow and widower(Ball and Fonda), who fall in love, marry and try to bring their kids together as one big happy family. And when I say big, I mean huge…between them they have 18 kids! The resentment the kids build up are very understandable, and all the child actors do a fabulous job of portraying their feelings. The courtship scenes will make you fall in love all over again.

Lucy, who was not far from 60 years old when she made this film, is absolutely gorgeous. She has a scene in which she wears a short skirt and shows off her still beautiful legs. Her comic abilities as always are the best. Who can do drunk better then she(and maybe Dudley Moore). Fonda is charming, handsome and brilliant as the father, and Naval officer who tries to run his family as he runs his ship. The supporting cast are no slouches. Van Johnson and Tom Bosley add their wonderful talents as well. A couple of faces to look for among the 18 children, are Tim Matheson as the eldest Beardsley child, Mike(Henry’s group) and Tracey Nelson, just a toddler as Germaine Beardsley.

A feel-good film that will keep you smiling throughout. One the entire family may enjoy together(especially big families),some fabulously funny dialogue, and a great look at the 60’s!

    Fonda: “…I’m glad I have 10 children”

Lucy: “And I’m glad I have my 8”

Fonda’s date, sitting between them: “And I’m glad I’m careful!”

    I’ll ALWAYS Love Lucy!… Enjoy…..Laurie

Lets face it, there are two kinds of people in the world, those who like Friends and those who hate it. I have grown up with this series on TV and have remained loyal even through the most mediocre of seasons (6,9 and parts of 10 spring to mind) but after watching the finale of season 8, I was just floored by how good the season had been. It was funny again, not just the kind of funny that makes you smile but makes you laugh out loud. My favorite episode from this season, other than the finale, has to be the one where Ross and Rachel pretend to be married. It not only provided us with some of the funniest moments of the season, but this episode like most others really delved into the relationship between Ross and Rachel. I think that relationship was the key ingredient to the season and it was really bittersweet. All that ‘we were on a break’ stuff was water under the bridge and all was good in Ross and Rachel Land again.

I will be at the store when it opens on Nov. 9 to buy this classic season. Could I be more into this show?

It’s finally coming : the next season of Friends on DVD !! And this November will see the 8th Season release !

I’m a fan of the show and to be honest, season 8 is not my favorite season, but it’s still a very good one because…. come on… it’s Friends we’re talking about !

Not my favorite season, nevertheless a season of the growing up mechanism for the 6 Friends (season 8 is truly the first season where all the Friends start to grow up and the situations start to change and evolve) : Rachel’s pregnancy makes her evolve and we’re getting far away from the 1st season spoiled Rachel; Monica and Chander experience their 1st year as a married couple, an important step in a couple’s life; Ross change his behavior towards Rachel when he learns he’s the father of her child and a Ross / Rachel reunion is evoked… Weird because, at the same time, episode 12 of the season features a storylyne involving a brand new, surprising couple : Rachel and Joey. A relationship that will become the key to this season’s cliffhanger as well as the whole season 9, including its cliffganger and that will eventually end at the beginning of the 10th [and final] season.

This relationship truly marks Joey and makes his character really evolve as well, and for the first time ever, we discover a Joey really in love with somebody.

Although a lot of fans were against this unexpected relationship and feelings betwen Rachel and Joey (mostly the Ross/Rachel fans), I’m a fan that found this storyline really interresting and it’s a plot that showed us that the writers were really inventing, plus they really well succeeded to include that in the show.

About the DVD set; sounds really nice (will be equally the same quality as the other seasons’s sets). I just hope we’ll have a wiewing option for the episode 8.03 “The One Where Rachel Tells” and that we’ll be able to see the orignal Monica and Chandler airport storyline, cut, reshot and changed in the broadcast episode after the 9/11 tragedy. The UK sets displayed this scene well at the end of the episode with a note from the producers.

Can’t wait to hold this set in my hands and can’t wait either to own the DVDs of the 9th and 10th seasons, whose releases are expected in 2005.

My review in one word : this set is part of the Friends collection, a wonderfull collection for the best comedy series ever ! So, whatever season you prefer, season 8 is a must for any DVD library, so just get it !

The eighth season of Friends finds the series rebounding strongly from a couple of good, but not great years. The series started picking up near the end of season seven with Monica (Courtney Cox) & Chandler’s (Matthew Perry) wedding and the cliffhanger of one of the girls being pregnant. Season eight opens with the wedding reception in progress and it is discovered that Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) is the one pregnant. Rachel’s pregnancy is the main storyline for the season. It is determined that Ross (David Schwimmer) is the father and this creates complications with Joey (Matt Le Blanc) who after living with Rachel develops feelings for her. The season’s finale episode where Rachel finally has the baby has gone down as one of the best, if not the best episode, in the series’ history. There are other hilarious episodes along the way including one where Chandler finds the soothing qualities of a bath with scented oils, one where Rachel tells Joey her boss is trying to buy her baby and Ross tries to retrieve his favorite shirt from his ex-girlfriend’s apartment, the one where Joey & Rachel go on a date and Monica gets Chandler a Ms. Pac Man machine and the annual Thanksgiving episode in which Ms. Aniston’s real life husband Brad Pitt guest stars as a fellow classmate and friend of Ross’ from high school who started the We Hate Rachel club in high school. Other big guest stars include Sean Penn & Alec Baldwin. This was the only year that Friends would win the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series and Ms. Aniston won the Best Actress Emmy for her work.

The Friends season-by-season collections on DVD have been fantastic! Season 8 showed a natural and very realistic progression in the lives of Monica, Ross, Rachel, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe. Episodes 171-194 covered the first year of Monica and Chandler’s married life together, Rachel finding out she was pregnant with Ross’s baby, Joey showing some maturity as he deals with his deepening feelings for Rachel, and Phoebe still trying to find her true love (boyfriends included guest stars Sean Penn and Alec Baldwin).

We had watched our “Friends” transition from their 20’s into their 30’s and came to know and love them even more in Season 8. We could sense the end was coming though–we thought it would be Season 9 but were treated to an additional (although shortened) Season 10.

Season 8 wasn’t all just growing up and getting serious though. Hysterical highlights from this year included Rachel crying out “I don’t see it!” when trying to spot her baby on the sonogram, Chandler’s claw hand after playing Ms. Pac-Man for hours, finding out Monica’s secret – her closest full of junk in her otherwise obsessively-clean apartment, and Chandler discovering the joys of a scented bubble bath.

Seasons 5, 6, and 7 were released just a few months apart from each other, and I was hoping Warner Bros. would continue on the fast-track with seasons 8, 9, and 10 so I could finally complete my collection. It’s been an agonizing summer of waiting for news of Season 8’s release date (checking Amazon every day waiting for the announcement). Can’t believe we still have to wait until November, but hopefully we’ll get a Christmas treat and be able to buy Seasons 9 and 10 before 2005 arrives.
