‘Game of Thrones’ just broke an Emmy record, but did it deserve to?

“Game of Thrones” walked away from the Creative Emmy Awards on Saturday night (Sept. 10) with 9 awards, breaking the record for total Emmy wins by a single series.

They’re likely to break their own record again on Sunday (Sept. 18) during the televised Emmys, where they are up for four more awards.

There’s no arguing that “Game of Thrones” is one of the best shows on TV right now from the production quality to the outstanding performances, but there’s also a lot of undeserved hype around the show at times. We’d argue that while they definitely deserved to win most of their Creative Emmys (largely thanks to the penultimate episode, “Battle of the Bastards”) there are a few they probably shouldn’t have.

Outstanding Special Visual Effects – Deserved

The episode submitted for this category was, of course, “Battle of the Bastards,” which had stunning visual effects throughout the entire hour. If anything else had won in this category, we would have been shocked and upset.

Outstanding Production Design – Deserved

No one can really match the production design quality of “Game of Thrones,” which is probably why they’ve had this award in the bag for years.

Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series – Undeserved

For the most part, “Game of Thrones” seems to hit the nail on the head when it comes to casting, but this year’s new players were either underwhelming or entirely forgettable. With the exception of the tenacious Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey), we’re going to say that the casting decisions this year were nothing special.

Outstanding Stunt Coordination – Deserved

This year we got fight scenes, chase scenes, cavalry charges and so much more. “Game of Thrones” always impresses on stunts, and Season 6 was no exception.

Outstanding Costumes for a Period/Fantasy Series, Limited Series or Movie – Deserved

Obviously the costumes on “Game of Thrones” only get more and more iconic as the years go on. This season, Cersei’s (Lena Headey) black coronation ensemble in “Winds of Winter” was particularly impressive.

Outstanding Sound Mixing – Deserved

Once again, “Battle of the Bastards” creamed all the other contenders for this award. We can’t even imagine how much work went into mixing that 40-minute long battle from anguished cries to clashing swords to hoofbeats. Bravo!

Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for a Series, Limited Series, Movie or Special – Undeserved

Thanks to the increased presence of White Walkers and Children of the Forest in Season 6, the need for extra impressive prosthetic makeup increased this year, but we’d argue there were better contenders for this category than “Game of Thrones.” Shows like “The Walking Dead” and “American Horror Story” really went above and beyond with their own prosthetics.

Outstanding Makeup (Non-Prosthetic) for a Single Camera Series – Deserved

Another win for “Battle of the Bastards” that is well deserved. It’s impossible not to cringe at all the blood and guts and gore that went into creating a realistic and gritty battleground in this episode.

Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series – Deserved

The editing process behind a big battle scene or a dragon attack has to be flawless to make the audience believe the craziness they’re seeing, and we tip our hats to to the editing team who worked on “Game of Thrones” Season 6. Totally deserved.
