‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7: The night is dark and full of Starks

Season 7 of “Game of Thrones” might still feel like its eons away, but Maisie Williams has been dropping clues here and there about what fans can expect from the next to last season.

Beyond her Twitter rant about how epic the ending of Season 7 will be, Maisie spoke to Variety about her thoughts on Arya’s journey in the final two seasons, and how dark the Stark family has become over the course of the series.

“It’s sad when our heroes take it too far and they don’t just do their job, they actually enjoy it and you see a twisted spark behind the eyes. It’s worrying,” Williams says.

In Season 6, Arya and her siblings, Sansa (Sophie Turner) and Jon (Kit Harington), have taken very dark turns. First, Jon’s battle for Winterfell culminated in some truly chilling moments, including his savage beating of Ramsay (Iwan Rheon). Sansa’s cold execution of Ramsay felt even darker, especially when you factor in how much she seemed to enjoy watching him ripped apart by his own dogs.

Finally, who could ever forget Arya’s violent — and pretty gross — murder of Walder Frey (David Bradley) and his sons?

When asked about the dark turn the Starks have taken lately, Williams didn’t seem shocked since it seemed like a natural progression for the characters to take after six seasons of torture.

“What did everyone expect, we’ve had it the worst since episode one – literally, one of the youngest Starks gets pushed out of a window in episode one, and every episode since, people have just fucked us over so badly,” Williams jokes. “And now, hopefully we get our revenge, but we’re also gonna be a little bit messed up by it all. And who can blame us?”

Obviously they all have very good reasons to become harsher, more violent people after all they’ve been put through, but it does worry us about where they’ll be headed in Season 7.

Ultimately, we’d love to see Arya, Jon and Sansa reunite at Winterfell and try their best to save the human race from the encroaching White Walker army; bonus points if they can save Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) while they’re at it.

Unfortunately, we’re just not sure that’s the direction “Game of Thrones” will be heading in the new year.

As Williams said, Arya seems to enjoy killing and vengeance, which makes us think she’ll head South to King’s Landing instead of North to her family. Cersei (Lena Headey) still needs to be crossed off her list, and now that she’s got the tools to slip around the castle unnoticed, she might finally be able to kill the Queen.

Sansa, too, has us questioning her motives. That last look she shared with Littlefinger (Aiden Gillan) after Jon was proclaimed King of the North has to mean something. Will Sansa be content to play defense at Winterfell, or will she be tempted to play the “Game of Thrones” like Littlefinger wants?

Jon is our last hope for humanity to win out, even if fighting so many wars and returning from the dead has brutalized him a little. If even he can’t manage to stay on the straight and narrow, “Game of Thrones” might be in for an even darker ending than we’ve always expected.

“Game of Thrones” will return in the summer of 2017 to HBO.
