Harry Shum Jr.: Malec is in for some ‘confusion’ in ‘Shadowhunters’ Season 2

Highlight on New Movie Released DVD

If you’re one of the millions of shippers who went absolutely nuts when Alec (Matthew Daddario) left his fiancé at the altar to march down the aisle and kiss Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) in the first season of “Shadowhunters,”  prepare to be even more thrilled with the “Malec” drama in Season 2.

The Season 2 premiere picks up right where we left off, only hours later, and Alec (as you can probably imagine) is on high alert, desperate to get his parabatai back.

The hunt for Jace (Dominic Sherwood) is on, but tensions are running high at the institute, which is never exactly conducive to romance. Mangus and Alec might have taken their first steps towards intimacy, but their fledgling relationship is headed for rough waters according to Harry Shum Jr.

“I think we left off in some place where there’s still a lot of confusion,” he says. “It’s not like, ‘Oh they kissed and everything’s going to be magical!’ Along with the threats that are happening with the downworld and the shadowworld, I think all that’s going to play into how they react towards each other.”

We never like to hear that a ship as awesome as Malec is about to go through tough times, but we don’t honestly believe this relationship is in jeopardy. What’s romance without a little drama, right?

Magnus and Alec’s own personal issues might not be the only thing to look out for, since they both still have past loves running around the city. Alec’s feelings for Jace seem to be always simmering just below the surface, and Magnus’ ex, Camille (Kaitlyn Leeb) has proven to be an obstacle before.

“I think Camille never goes away,” Shum says. “She just never goes away… She kind of comes back into his life constantly.”

We hope for Alec’s sake — and probably for Simon’s (Alberto Rosende) too, Camille stays far away from these characters until things settle down. Can you imagine adding a rogue vampire into this crazy mess?

“Shadowhunters” returns Jan. 2, 2017 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Freeform.
