Has Rumbelle finally reached their breaking point?

Lately, we’ve been wondering about Rumbelle’s future, and whether or not these two should get their act together or just throw in the towel completely.

After finding out that Rumple (Robert Carlyle) and the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) had been … reacquainting themselves as of late, Belle (Emilie de Ravin) took a pretty tough stand against her husband and his choices.

As much as we’d love to believe that her jealousy was what spurred her to confront Rumple, it was actually his plans to cut his son’s ties to fate that got Belle riled up.

On the one hand, we get Rumple’s desire to use the Shears of Destiny. After all, he’s been through this whole song and dance once before.

Baelfire’s (Michael Raymond-James) hatred of him already cost him one son, and now he’s been given the chance to avoid that fate a second time. Understandably, Rumple is desperate to at least give himself a fighting chance at earning his second child’s love. Plus, having a fully-grown adult version of your unborn son tear into you for being a bad father kind of seems kind of like self-fulfilling prophecy.

On the other hand, making a unilateral, magical decision (AGAIN with  the magic, Rumple?!) about your son’s future without consulting his mother is so not the way to earn a child’s love. We’re actually a little surprised Belle didn’t rail at him even more about a plan like that. She’d have been well within her rights to start throwing furniture, in our humble opinion.

The Rumbelle relationship has gone from rough to heartbreaking to hopeless pretty quickly, which is a shame since “Once Upon a Time” is a show built on hope.

Our last shining beacon of optimism is Belle’s unwavering belief that Rumple can be a better man, he just choses not to.

She might have said it in the meanest possible way — “That’s worse than being evil, that’s just being too weak to be good.” — but at this stage in the game Rumple needed a good kick if he’s ever going to change his ways. And we do hope he changes.

When all is said and done, the tale of “Beauty and the Beast” isn’t quite as inspiring if the beauty ends up raising a kid all by herself because the beast couldn’t get his life together and turn into a decent prince.

“Once Upon a Time” airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
