Everybody take a deep breath and then let out a sigh of overwhelming relief: Toby (Chris Sullivan) lives to see another day.

“This Is Us” returned Tuesday (Jan. 10) with yet another emotionally taxing episode, and despite all the happy developments (like Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) buying their first home or Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) deciding to get married) we can’t help but pay attention to the gloomy side of things.

William (Ron Cephas Jones) has decided to stop chemotherapy and spend his final months — or weeks — without the pain and sickness of his treatments. Ultimately, we can’t know if this will kill him faster or not, but it’s hard not to sympathize with his desire to die on his own terms, without the debilitating symptoms of chemo.

His death seems imminent, and we’re sure it’s going to devastate us when it happens.

On that train of thought, this episode gave us a horrifying theory: What if “This Is Us” decides to pack all the crying time it can into one night by killing both Jack and William in the same episode.

We know Jack died at some indeterminate past date, and we obviously know William’s days are numbered too. “This Is Us” has managed to create some unbelievably compelling symmetry between the past and present storylines, and each episode seems to have a core theme running through both stories. Whether it’s sacrificing for the people you love, being honest with them, or letting them go, the lessons learned in one timelines typically resound in the other.

So could “This Is Us” really be so cruel as to rob us of two amazing fathers in one fell swoop?

Umm … definitely. Do you not understand what kind of show you’re watching at this point?!

Whenever that time comes, we can only hope that the heartbreak of Jack and William’s loss will be offset by happier plots we’re also still anticipating. We have yet to see Jack and Rebecca’s wedding day — a story that might coincide nicely with Kate’s nuptials, when you think about it — and there are still several Pearson family milestones left on the timeline.

Until then, we’re determined to enjoy whatever time we have left with the Big Three’s amazing father duo.
