If Matthew McConaughey returned to ‘True Detective,’ what would he do exactly?

While this news isn’t breaking — he’s been championing the idea for a while — Matthew McConaughey once again made it known that he’s completely willing to hop back on board the (currently stalled) “True Detective” train. But it’s been almost four years since Season 1 took television by storm. And really, the question we have to ask is: If he did come back, what would he do exactly?

McConaughey was a recent guest on The Rich Eisen Show, and much like during his previous visit, the memorable role of Rustin Cohle was brought up in the conversation. When asked if he’d return, the actor didn’t at all hesitate to make his stance known, saying: “If that thing was written well and it came up again, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second,” he tells Eisen. “Oh, I’m open to it for sure.”

Originally, we were under the impression that each season of “True Detective” would act as a standalone story — following a different set of characters, in a different location, involved in a different crime. But as Season 2 squashed whatever creative dreams the first season conjured up, could it be possible that EP Nic Pizzolatto would want to revisit the world of Rust Cohle and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson)?

Honestly, something tells us that Harrelson wouldn’t be so open to returning to the project, as Marty’s story was wrapped up quite nicely. Still, that final visual of he and Cohle walking off into the horizon leaves things feeling open to suggestion.

Personally, we’d love to see any further adventures of Rustin Cohle play out on the small screen. McConaughey was simply mesmerizing in the role and his hunt for The Yellow King had audiences continually engaged. But would it make sense for him to return? That really depends on Pizzolatto.

A third season of “True Detective” would make sense in the limited series narrative realm it has made its home. But, if McConaughey returns as Cohle, it probably should be in a supporting role this time around.

You know, maybe Pizzolatto could do something along the lines of what Ryan Murphy has done with “American Horror Story” — regularly bringing fan favorite actors (and sometimes characters) back in smaller capacities. That could most definitely work. This is, of course, if the HBO series would stick to its limited series brand.

Would audiences be open to such a thing?

When it comes to the varied work of Matthew McConaughey, and the ongoing gift that is the McConaissance, our notion would be a resounding yes.
