Kerry Washington doesn’t mind you knowing that she puts effort into her spot-on red carpet looks.
The Scandal star, 36, does use a stylist, Erin Walsh, but she doesn’t rely on her.
“I work very closely with my stylist,” Washington, clad in Giambattista Valli, told PEOPLE at an event for her show on Thursday in L.A. “She and I are a team.”
The actress enjoys the process of selecting what to wear and makes it a priority to ensure her choices speak for herself.

“It’s a creative outlet for me,” she explains. “I don’t choose to wear anything that I’m going to be uncomfortable in and I don’t dress for other people’s opinions. I dress for my own opinions.”
Although she says there are “too many” of her recent approved looks to list a favorite, she admits she’s likely prone to an eventual faux pas.
“Give me time,” she says. “I’m sure I will [have one].” We won’t hold our breath!
