Kurt Cobain “Ren & Stimpy” Theme Song Rejected

Before Kurt Cobain became the ’90s’ Poster Child for teenage angst and angry youth, the Nirvana frontman wrote a theme song for the colorful animated series Ren & Stimpy that was rejected by the show’s bosses.

In a podcast on Nerdist.com this week, Billy West, the voice behind the lovably-dimwitted feline Stimpy, remembered the day back in 1991 when Cobain wandered into the offices of Spumco, the company behind the show, and offered a demo of a song he’d made.

“One day, this scraggly kid came in and said he wanted to write a song for Ren & Stimpy… and it was Kurt Cobain,” West recalls.

Series producers, it seems, missed the potential and binned the disc immediately.

“They (TV chiefs) said, ‘Yeah, that’s great’, and they threw it in the wastebasket.”

No one close to “Smells Like Teen Spirit” rocker has confirmed the story but as the cartoon ran from 1991 to 1993 observers have claimed it is possible Kurt — who was a huge fan of cartoons with toilet bowl humor, like Ren & Stimpy – could stopped by the studio’s Los Angeles offices while touring with Nirvana.
