‘Last Man Standing’ Season 2 finale: Was the return of Jonathan Taylor Thomas everything you wanted?

“Last Man Standing” has come to the end of Season 2, and there were hints of changes in the air — daughters moving out, college plans, new jobs… But all of that paled in comparison to the big draw of the season finale: the return of Jonathan Taylor Thomas to television.

In all honesty, getting JTT was a big win for “Last Man Standing.” We don’t usually pay attention to this show, for example, so at least the Tim Allen sitcom managed that. But was it enough to end the season right?

We may need to use our JTT checklist to figure that out.

Lots and lots of Jonathan Taylor Thomas: “Last Man Standing” didn’t do so well here. Thomas appeared only in a couple of scenes and didn’t have all that much to do.

JTT bang for our buck: At least the show did well with what little Jonathan we had — the fellow is still the charming, snarky guy we fell in love with back when he was an adolescent heartthrob.

“Home Improvement” jokes: If “Last Man Standing” did anything right, it was in reminiscing about the good ol’ days on “Home Improvement.” Thomas entered the show making a joke about the charm of the middle child. Allen got to make jokes about recognizing the young man and pointing out that he must have been raised right. We even got a “more power” line thrown in. All the show needed was a good Tim the Tool-Man Taylor grunt, and we would have been transported back to the ’90s.

Hopes for the future: No one at “Last Man Standing” has made any comment about the potential future of Thomas on the show. The plot of the finale, however, definitely left room for a recurring role. Thomas’s character is now Kristin’s boss and a possible rival for her affection. That could be a lot of fun.

So did the return of Jonathan Taylor Thomas work for you? Was it a good season finale for “Last Man Standing”? Should the show return next fall — and should JTT come along? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment!
