UPDATED: We’ve added more concept images below for both movies
We still have a ways to go before Marvel begins revealing more of its upcoming space-set adventure Guardians of the Galaxy (in theaters August 1, 2014), but concept art for the ambitious comic book movie does exist, and apparently some more of it has finally arrived online. In addition to the group shot revealed at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con (see above), three additional images show us more of the characters, their ship and a dark cavern where it appears as if a character is being held prisoner by some kind of holographic web.
Here’s a group shot of the main characters (left to right: Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, Groot and Star-Lord) who appear to be bargaining with someone inside a bar that definitely resembles the Mos Eisley cantina from Star Wars.
Another piece of concept art shows off the team’s ship, which again resembles a few different ships from Star Wars, like the Jawa’s landcruiser and Jabba’s ship from Return of the Jedi.
Lastly is this dark image, which looks to take place inside some cavern where a character looks trapped inside a web of lights. Is this some kind of prison? Is that the villain? A hero?
All three of these images are said to be featured on the new Blu-ray box set within a preview of Marvel’s Phase Two plan, and we like what we see. It’s wise to use Star Wars as an access point when you’re creating a film primarily set in space, and while this isn’t much to go by, that first image with the characters sitting around a table offers up much more than you would think. Their facial and body expressions tell us so much about who they are and how they fit into the group dynamic. With this film relying almost entirely on this group and the way they work together (a la The Avengers), that one image definitely goes a long way in setting up what looks like it’s going to be a fun movie.
UPDATE: More from Guardians of the Galaxy [thanks to RoS for the additional images]
Is that Iron Man in Guardians of the Galaxy, or is this concept art from the the end of Iron Man 3? Hmmm…
Bonus: Here’s some concept art from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which shows Cap squaring off against his one-time friend (and now foe) Bucky Barnes.
More from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, now with concept art featuring Anthony Mackie’s Falcon character
And here’s a clip previewing Marvel’s Phase Two initiative.
