As we go deeper into awards season, new trailers for some of the most anticipated and acclaimed movies of the year are arriving left and right. The following three new spots deal with tragedies of relative measure, and they all look like essential parts of our moviegoing plans the next few months.
Jackie
Natalie Portman has been a frontrunner for the Oscar for Best Actress since buzz began at its Venice Film Festival premiere last month, and on top of that the reviews for her performance and the movie overall have been as positive as can be. This first teaser promises an intense biopic starring Portman as Jacqueline Kennedy in her time of grief just after the assassination of her husband, President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Look for it in theaters December 2.

Patriot’s Day
Half a century later, another shocking incident occurred on the streets of Boston during the city’s annual marathon. Director Peter Berg and star Mark Wahlberg just hit theaters with Deepwater Horizon, also based on a real-life disaster, and they’ll soon be following it up with this drama about the horrible bombing attack on September 11, 2013. As seen in the first trailer, John Goodman also stars as Police Commissioner Ed Davis. See it in limited release starting December 21 or when it goes wider January 13, 2017.

The Edge of Seventeen
Nothing that happens in this Hailee Steinfeld-led teen movie is anything near as terrible as those tragedies depicted in Jackie and Patriots’ Day, but to a high schooler, finding your best friend sleeping with your brother or accidentally sending a sext to a boy you like can seem like the worst thing to ever happen in the history of the world. We’ve seen a lot of the footage in this second Red Band trailer before, but now it’s filled with glowing blurbs from very respectable critics. Check it out November 18.
