While some entries of the DC Extended Universe are having difficulty moving forward, we needn’t fear because at least Aquaman is near. Jason Mamoa will make his first full appearance as the oceanic superhero, who hails from the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, this fall in Justice League with the solo feature out almost a year later.
We’ve been hearing bits and pieces about the latter for awhile now, including last month’s confirmation that Patrick Wilson is playing Aquaman’s half-brother ORM, aka the villain Ocean Master. Also, Amber Heard is on board as the love interest, Mera — she’ll also appear in Justice League — and William Dafoe is one of the good guys, an Atlantean politician named Vulko. James Wan is attached to direct.
Now we’ve got two new additions to the cast. According to separate posts by The Hollywood Reporter, current Oscar nominee Nicole Kidman is in talks to play Aquaman’s mother, Atlanna, while relative newcomer Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (The Get Down, pictured above) is up for the part of Black Manta. That means earlier word that Black Manta would be the main villain is correct, despite Wilson’s addition.
Kidman has, of course, already dipped her red locks into the world of DC superheroes with her role as Dr. Chase Meridian in Batman Forever, though that was a character made up for the movie. Atlanna hails from the comics and is an instrumental part of Aquaman’s origin, obviously. As for Black Manta, he’s considered the hero’s archnemesis, so that should be a breakout role for Abdul-Mateen.
Aquaman arrives in theaters on October 5, 2018, just in time for all these characters to be popular Halloween costumes.
