Nike Finally Releasing ‘Back to the Future 2’ Air Mags (Updated with Shoe Images and Details)

Earlier this evening producer Frank Marshall tweeted the following: “Something big is coming soon. Can’t say anything yet. No one should know too much about their own destiny.” He included the hashtag #BTTF, alluding to some big Back to the Future announcement. Naturally we all feared a remake or reboot, but according to Nice Kicks, that announcement is probably related to the mysterious BTTF viral package Nike recently sent around featuring a ton of groovy swag from Back to the Future: Part II, claiming an announcement will take place tomorrow.

We know Nike has been working on perfecting the automatic lacing system for awhile, so are they ready to debut it? And are they using BTTF 2 as a platform to launch the new technology? If they’re able to mirror the shoe used in the movie, a lot of 80’s geeks are going to, well, geek the hell out (including yours truly). Look for the announcement to hit tomorrow ..

UPDATE: Michael J. Fox will be appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman tonight at the same time the Nike event in LA is supposed to kick off. Expect Marty McFly to demonstrate the new sneakers himself on live TV.

UPDATE 2: Nike has unveiled the official video announcement for their new Air Mag, aka “Marty Mcfly.” 1500 pairs will be auctioned on eBay with all proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Here’s more description of the shoe (and two images) from NiceKicks:

The Air Mag is the first rechargeable footwear from Nike were designed as an identical replica to the originals seen in the Back to the Future II movie. Some of the constant elements include the upper contours, the glowing LED panel and the electroluminescent Nike logo in the strap. The Nike Air Mag actually illuminates with the pinch of the “ear” of the high top, glowing for five hours per charge.

Unfortunately these won’t feature power laces; they simply light up when you pinch the high top. Producer Frank Marshall may have given us more of a clue when he tweeted earlier, “POWERLACES? Not until 2015.” Still worth it if it doesn’t come with automatic laces?
