A spokesperson for President Barack Obama has confirmed that the Commander-in-Chief will appear on upcoming episode of the Discovery Channel science series Mythbusters.

Obama will appear in a walk-on role — airing on the popular show later this year — to quiz the show’s hosts about an ancient weapon of mass destruction.

“I’m pleased to welcome Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, known as the Mythbusters. I can announce today that I taped a special guest appearance for their show, although I didn’t get to blow anything up,” Obama said at The White House Science Fair in Washington on Monday. “I was a little frustrated about that.”

On the episode, airing Dec. 8, hosts Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage try to prove the veracity of historical and scientific tales as part of a White House Science Fair. Obama will challenge the hosts to revisit an ancient and controversial myth: “Did Greek scientist and polymath Archimedes set fire to an invading Roman fleet using only mirrors and the reflected rays of the sun?”

“Prepared to test this myth in a way they’ve never been able to before, will Adam and Jamie be able to pull it off, or will they have to report back to the president that they failed?” Discovery said in a press release issued this week.

Obama, who was the first sitting president to appear on late-night talk shows, has made a number of appearances on unusual TV shows since taking office in Jan. 2009. In recent months alone, Obama has shown up on channels like MTV and ESPN — that’s a far cry from the Meet The Press-esque programs where past presidents have historically felt more comfortable.
