The first season of BBC America’s “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” is almost over and Saturday’s (Nov. 19) episode, titled “Very Erectus,” sets the random group of heroes and villains on a path towards on epic — and possibly wacky — battle.
Previously, we received a tip regarding Dirk’s (Samuel Barnett) true nature, and how he’s connected to the top-secret government experiment known as Project Blackwing. Joining him in this elite group of weirdos are the Rowdy 3. Yes, they’ve taken a liking to Amanda (Hannah Marks) and we have a feeling with the way the confrontation between Colonel Riggins (Miguel Sandoval), Sergeant Friedkin (Dustin Milligan) and the van-full of energy vampires took place, things are going to get way more heated the next time they run into each other.
And, oh yes, there will be a next time.

From the looks of things, Friedkin is being tapped to go all-in on the aggressive front to retrieve those rogue patients we know as the Rowdies, Dirk Gently, Bart Curlish (Fiona Dourif) and Lux DuJour’s (Aaron Douglas) bald henchmen. But as we saw in Saturday’s episode, aggression may not be the best strategy to take.
Agents Zimmerfield (Richard Schiff) and Estevez (Neil Brown Jr.) followed their law-enforcement intuitions as they continued the hunt for Lydia Spring. Leading them to a rather creepy abandoned building in a supposedly locked up section of the zoo, they’re soon met with a different sort of aggression. Guns and electrified arrows rain down upon our heroes and, unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to Zimmerfield.
Leaving Estevez alone on a mission to find Lydia Spring (Alison Thornton), Farah (Jade Eshete) hid in the woods, witnessing the whole shootout take place. Not only that, as Gordon Rimmer (aka Lux DuJour) left his hideout — Farrah made visual confirmation of the missing girl, barking in the backseat of his car.
While we’re left unpacking a large amount of details from this episode, the real highlight came from Todd and Dirk’s hunt for Patrick’s Spring’s buried treasure. As they headed on their own quirky off-road adventure, the two loners finally took the time to cement their hesitant friendship. And after they found all of Spring’s missing components — which we think may be a time traveling apparatus — our heroes are fired upon by unknown assailants.
It wouldn’t be our first instinct to throw an innocent kitten at a couple of armed men, but it seems that their cute little pet is way more than meets the eye. Did Lux DuJour transfer the spirit of a great white shark into the body of a kitten? It seems so. And we finally got our first look at the real murder weapon that left those bite marks in Spring’s hotel room.
While the story continues to come full-circle, we are left with many questions. Thankfully, with one episode left, we have hope all the answers will fall into place. Now all they have to do is find the mysterious kitten-shark — as the animal seems to be Todd and Dirk’s main lead to finding the culprit of the grisly murder that started the whole shebang.
“Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on BBC America.
