Ricky Martin Kristin Chenoweth GLAAD Honors

Now openly gay singer Ricky Martin and Emmy-winning Broadway babe Kristin Chenoweth will be honored for their work to encourage equal rights for the gay community at the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s (GLAAD) annual Media Awards in New York City (March 19) and Los Angeles (April 10) later this year.

The former Menudo boy bander — who came out last year, ending decades of speculation over his sexuality — will receive The Vito Russo Award, given annually to an openly gay, lesbian, transgender or bisexual professional who is deemed to have made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for the community.

“Ricky coming out was a game changer for many gay and transgender Latino children, who for too long did not have many out gay people to look up to,” GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios said Wednesday.
“Through his music, videos and interviews, Ricky has sent an important message that our community wants the same things all people do: an equal chance to raise our families and take care of our loved ones.”

Chenoweth is being honored for her work to promote better understanding with the organization’s Vanguard Award, typically awarded to those who increase the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community. Kristin impressed GLAAD bosses when publicly defended gay actors’ ability to play straight roles after a Newsweek theater critic used the argument to slam her Promises, Promises co-star Sean Hayes and his “unconvincing” performance on the stage.

“When allies like Kristin take such powerful stands against anti-gay sentiments in the media, it sends an important message of equality,” Jarrett added. “It is a privilege to honour such a talented and conscientious advocate for fairness towards the LGBT community.”

The Media Awards, recognizing the best portrayals of the LGBT community on film, television, radio, music, newspapers, and blogs, also mark GLAAD’s 25th anniversary.
