Steve Landesberg, who played Det. Arthur Dietrich on Barney Miller from 1975 until the New York cop show ended in 1982, died Monday after a long battle against an unspecified form of cancer.

He was 65.

“I’m sorry to report the loss of Steve,” Landesberg’s longtime agent Jeffrey Leavitt told The Hollywood Reporter Monday.

In addition to his breakout role in Barney Miller, Landesberg also appeared in bit parts of on a bevy of TV series, such as Head Case, Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Cosby, The Golden Girls, Everybody Hates Chris, and Seinfeld.

The former standup comedian also enjoyed a role in the 2008 Russell Brand-assisted comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
