‘Supergirl’: Mehcad Brooks teases ‘skin-tight’ Guardian super-suit

National City is apparently chock-full of do-gooders, and we got to witness the birth of a pretty awesome one on “Supergirl” Monday (Nov. 7) night.

After getting thoroughly trounced by some low-level criminals (armed with pretty high-level weapons), James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) finally decided to take matters into his own hands and fight whatever crime he could find. Unfortunately, without Winn (Jeremy Jordan) at his side to help him play hero, James was forced to suit up in a simple hoodie for his debut as a vigilante. Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) would be proud.

An official super suit is on the way though, and according to Brooks, it’s pretty snug.

“Well, they fitted the suit to me, which is amazing,” Brooks says. “It’s really futuristic and cool … It’s skin-tight. I was like, ‘I’ve got to fit into this every time?’ So I started fasting every eight days, which is really good for you.”

As far as how Kara will eventually react to this news, we’re pretty concerned. She’s never been a fan of being lied to, and Kara and James’ friendship is still so fragile. They’ve just decided against pursuing a romance, and though that storm is slowly but surely passing, it’s still got them on unsure ground.

“He knows that she cares about him, and he knows that she could stop him, and we all know that she could, if she wanted to,” Brooks says. “It’s more about him wanting to earn her respect in a world that he’s not in yet, so that he can prove that this is something he can do.”

We’ll have to wait a while for that intense confrontation though, since Kara won’t encounter Guardian in all his skin-tight glory until the next episode (Nov. 12).

When all is said and done, we don’t imagine that Kara will hold it against James that he wants to help National City. They’re both incredibly compassionate people who want to do good in the world, and so long as Kara can accept her friend putting himself in danger, it’s something they should eventually be able to bond over.

James isn’t the only one fighting crime, though. Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) seems to have a surprisingly altruistic agenda, if her trap for the alien weapon-wielding baddies was any indication.

We’re actually starting to believe that she might be a genuinely good person who just got stuck in a bad family. With a mother who runs Cadmus and a brother who’s Superman’s evil nemesis, it’s kind of a miracle if she turned out normal — and now we’re naturally back on guard, because what if we’re just falling for her act?!

This is one mystery we’re going to be agonizing over for the rest of the season, that’s for sure.

“Supergirl” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
