In an otherwise uneventful MTV Video Music Awards — unless you count Kanye’s bizarre cat-face video ending — Beyond stole the stage for a solid 10 minutes on Sunday (Aug. 28) in what was essentially just a Queen Bey concert.

The pop star danced her way through all the best songs from “Lemonade,” including “Pray You Catch Me,” “Hold Up,” “Sorry,” “Don’t Hurt Yourself,” “Love You Like I Love You” and “Formation.” The performance was in a word, stellar. She even took a bat to the camera at one point.

However, no matter how much we adore Queen Bey, we have to play devil’s here and wonder why the VMAs decided to essentially throw a Beyonce concert in the middle of their awards show. Typically, a performance of this magnitude is reserved for the Video Vanguard Award winner, who is Rihanna this year.

While Rihanna is getting several performances paced out through the night, the show-stopping number was definitely reserved for Beyonce.

On the plus side, if you were bummed about not getting to see “Lemonade” in concert, the VMAs just kind of fixed that problem for you.
