The ‘Prison Break’ premiere gave T-Bag a robot hand, and we have so many questions

After a seven-year hiatus, “Prison Break” made its triumphant return to FOX Tuesday (April 4) — presenting a huge new mystery waiting to unfold, with more of those characteristic, fun twists and neat puzzle pieces than we even expected.

So much has changed since we last checked in with Lincoln (Dominic Purcell), Michael (Wentworth Miller), C-Note (Rockmond Dunbar) and Sucre (Amaury Nolasco). It seems Michael’s alive and living in a Yemenese prison — and the gang is out to help him escape.

As riveting as that all is, we can’t help but wonder how T-Bag (Robert Knepper) fits into the equation. Theodore Bagwell isn’t someone we’d point to as a model prisoner: He’s a convicted rapist and murderer, after all. In fact, we’re unsure how he got released from Fox River State Penitentiary, to begin with. But he’s the one who ends up receiving the news on Scofield’s situation first.

Why Bagwell? Maybe it’s because he’s the final person from the original escape that’s still in prison… But something tells us “Prison Break” isn’t about to keep things that simple…

Not long after he’s released, Bagwell receives an odd invite: A man named Dr. Whitcombe offers T-Bag a fully operational prosthetic hand, at absolutely no charge.

This is a pretty big deal: Bagwell has been without a real left hand for years. After it was chopped off in Season 1, he had a veterinarian sew it back on — not the most sustainable solution, obviously, and Bagwell eventually settled for the mannequin hand he’s been sporting ever since.

This brings us back to this new prosthetic hand… We’re not completely sure who the donor is that makes the procedure possible, but a few clues lead us to two viable candidates:

It could be Michael’s

Once the robot hand is attached, T-Bag presses the doctor for answers. He’s given just one word: “Outis,” the Greek word for Nobody. It seems that Michael’s identity in Ogygia prison is that of renowned terrorist Kaniel Outis. Could Michael be the one behind T-Bag’s new hand?

While we’re unsure how he’d come up with the money to fund such a procedure, a gift of this magnitude could easily be considered an olive branch of sorts. The two men were never friendly, and Bagwell has blamed Michael for his missing hand since he was cuffed to Scofield back in Season 1. But this could be a turning point for their relationship.

Plus, Bagwell may offer a specific skillset Michael needs once his escape plan is in motion…

It could be the real Kaniel Outis

Investigating Michael’s whereabouts, Lincoln discovers someone is trying to erase his brother from ever existing. It could be Michael’s doing — after all, he faked his own death years ago.

But what if it’s the same people trying to kill Lincoln, C-Note and Sara (Sarah Wayne Callies)? The two assassins on the case boast some high-tech equipment early in the hour: Hacking into Lincoln’s rental car, sending Burrows flying from the vehicle. Could these killers be associated with the real Kaniel Outis? It’s revealed the terrorist has ties to ISIL — and thus, might have access to large amounts of dangerous money.

If they’re out to get rid of Michael — and any record of his existence — who better to tap for help than Theodore “T-Bag” Bagwell? He’s been operating on the knowledge that Michael’s been dead this entire time. But now that it’s been proven otherwise, Bagwell may be the perfect person to use. His own drive for revenge against Michael could be the icing on the proverbial cake.

“Fate has got us joined at the hip,” Bagwell tells Lincoln in the episode’s opening moments. Has he turned over a new leaf? Or will T-Bag revert to his old ways? Whatever the case, he’s going to be an integral part of this mission — and that suits us just fine. It wouldn’t be “Prison Break” otherwise.

“Prison Break” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
