The pros & cons of adding David Milch to the ‘True Detective’ team

It’s been a while since we’ve heard any news on “True Detective’s” future, but now there’s new info to mull over: HBO announced on Monday (March 27) that writer/producer David Milch (“Deadwood,” “NYPD Blue”) has been brought on board to work with Nic Pizzolatto on fleshing out new episodes.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Pizzolatto has already written at least two episodes for Season 3. Bringing Milch on board has our heads spinning with the possibilities of where this new partnership can lead.

To be clear, it sounds as if the two men will be working as writers together on the project. No showrunner has been announced and HBO hasn’t used Milch as an executive producer on any project since the tragic end of his short-lived horse racing drama, “Luck.”

For the first two seasons of “TD,” Pizzolatto acted as the sole writer, which leaves us wondering if the show could work with multiple voices behind the new narrative?

Milch has proven himself to be a genius voice in the television world, but his crazy reputation — remember the gambling problem? — is one of wild unpredictability that can set back deadlines and have the talent completely confused about the expected end result.

But, the man has a way with dialogue — so much so, it almost feels like his work on “Deadwood” completely rewrote the book on how drama can exist on the small screen.

Now may be the perfect time for HBO to add another writer to the series. David Milch’s style would certainly bring an air of cinematic bravado to the project. But can “True Detective” achieve its former glory with this new creative partnership? We’ll just have to wait and see.
