‘The Vampire Diaries’: It’s the end of the road for Steroline… and Damon?
The final season of “The Vampire Diaries” has been pretty grim — and the Dec. 2 installment was more devastating than most. Not because of any dark magic or devious spells, but because of the amount of sacrifices necessary to save the lives of Caroline (Candace King) and Alaric’s (Matt Davis) twin girls.
Obviously, there’s no questioning any of these characters would do anything for those kids. And for once it wasn’t Bonnie (Kat Graham) that had to sacrifice herself. For the past eight seasons, it always felt like it was Bonnie (Kat Graham) who had to give up who and what she loved to save others — but in this episode, “Detoured on Some Random Backwards Road to Hell,” it’s Caroline and Stefan (Paul Wesley) who end up suffering the most… While Bonnie and Enzo (Michael Malarkey) turn out to be the only two who really survive.

In a last minute turn of events, Sybil (Nathalie Kelley) takes over Seline’s (Kristen Gutoskie) deal with Cade (Wolé Parks): Instead of the twins, she offers up a willing Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan to take their place. Stefan promised his fiancée that he’d do anything to save her children, and he did — surrendering his soul to Cade.
Now the Salvatore Brothers have 24 hours of freedom before becoming slaves for all of eternity.
The silver lining? The twins are safe and sound. What’s sad: This it for Steroline.
But what’s even sadder? Caroline realizes her kids are better of without her. She loves them more than anything, even more than her relationship with Stefan. But after a blunt argument with her babies’ daddy, in which Alaric yells in a fit of anger that all the horrible things happening to “his” kids is because of her — it’s harsh but that part’s true. So Caroline tells Alaric the he needs to take the girls and go — just moments before Stefan tells her exactly how he saved the twins.

It’s almost Christmas on “The Vampire Diaries,” and even though Damon appeared to die in tonight’s episode, he’s alive and well in previews for the next. It’s not going to be a holly jolly holiday in the Salvatore house next week — but when is it ever? At least it looks hilarious…
And there’s no doubt Caroline and friends are going to take Damon and Stefan’s deal with Cade without a fight. They’ll be scheming up some sort of plan — and for Steroline’s sake, we hope it works.
“The Vampire Diaries” airs on Friday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
