‘This Is Us’ just gave us all the clues we need to figure out Jack’s death

The mystery of Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) death has been hanging over the first season of “This Is Us” like a guillotine — and as we approach the finale episode, we seem to finally have all the clues we need to figure out what happened to him.

With Rebecca (Mandy Moore) out on tour, we were pretty nervous that Jack would end up cheating with the sexy secretary intent on flirting with him every chance she got — but good old Jack proved us wrong. He never had any interest in straying from his marriage, he just wasn’t being a particularly supportive husband: That goodbye before Rebecca left for her tour was proof enough of that.

Thanks to a heart-to-heart from daughter Kate (Chrissy Metz), though, Jack realized that he needed to apologize and hash things out, and got in his car to drive to Cleveland and watch Rebecca’s show. It’s an undoubtedly romantic gesture … Just not one you should make when you’ve had a few rounds at the bar late at night. The puzzle pieces seem to be adding up to a fatal drunk driving incident, which is just a horrific way to lose a parent and husband.

Jack’s last conversation with a teenage Kate, where he tells her how she inspired him to make it right, might be his last conversation period.

If so, we’ve also got a pretty good idea why Kate has been struggling with the memories of Jack’s death so much lately. Just as we theorized earlier in the season, Kate feels solely responsible for her father’s death. In her mind, if she hadn’t pushed him to go to the show, he wouldn’t have been drunk on that highway.

Obviously Toby (Chris Sullivan) will be an integral part in disabusing her of that notion, now that adult Kate has decided to be open with him about her dad. We just hope her heightened emotional state won’t make her do something awful like break off their engagement — it’s a season finale, and season finales tend to end in either weddings or heartbreak.

Whatever the case, we’re morbidly eager to finally learn the truth — and maybe figure out how Miguel (Jon Huertas) factors into this whole story, too…
