‘This Is Us’ thinking Toby’s working an angle

Call us cynical, but the latest episode of “This Is Us” has us giving Toby (Chris Sullivan) the side eye.

In a sweeping, romantic gesture, Toby decides to show Kate (Chrissy Metz) that she’s every bit as important and deserving of the spotlight as her super-demanding twin brother by helping her put on a show. Sure, the show is for a handful of senior citizens at a retirement home, but Toby spares no expense to make Kate feel like the belle of the ball, from the cute red carpet to the car service.

The idea itself is incredibly thoughtful and sweet, which is why we’re pretty sure something hinky is going on with this guy. Why is he being so nice? Is he just a romantic at heart, or should we be worried about his motives?

It’s hard to buy the heart of gold act, no matter how in touch “This Is Us” has been with our feels in its first three weeks.

Thinking back on the second episode, Toby twisted Kate’s arm a bit in order to snag an invite to a swanky Hollywood party thrown by her brother’s agent. We initially assumed Toby might have been using Kate as his one-way ticket into the biz, but he spent most of night plastered to her side instead of schmoozing.

Still, there’s something off about this guy and his super sweetness, and we hope Kate’s being careful with her heart. We’d hate for the first real relationship she’s had in years to end on a sour note all because she’s letting herself be blinded by Toby’s wit and charm.

If, however, Toby turns out to be nothing more than a sweet, uncomplicated, completely genuine human being, we’re going to feel like cynical jerks.

On the other side of the country, Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) have a heart-to-heart about his birth father, but mommy-dearest leaves out one huge detail — she’s met him before.

Way back when, Rebecca tracked down Randall’s biological father and never said a word about it. It was pretty heartwarming to find out that Randall was almost named Kyle until Rebecca took William’s (Ron Cephas Jones) suggestion not to name him after their third, stillborn triplet.

However, we’re still in the dark about what went down between Rebecca, Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Miguel (Jon Huertas) way back when and whether or not that’s a shoe waiting to drop in one of the show’s upcoming flashbacks.

In the meantime, we can worry about whether or not Randall will blow a gasket when he finds out his mom purposefully kept his birth father out of his life. Given that he’ll likely only get a few months with William before the cancer takes him, we don’t imagine he’ll be too forgiving.

“This Is Us” airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
