Tricia Helfer: ‘Lucifer’s’ Mom is simply ‘misunderstood’

Mom has finally come to town on “Lucifer,” but she’s not quite what we expected her to be.

Mom, or Charlotte (Tricia Helfer), as her human body is named, collapsed into Lucifer’s (Tom Ellis) arms at the end of the Season 2 premiere  — instead of raining down fire and blood on her sons as expected. Could it be that this heavenly mother is not quite the villain Lucifer has painted her to be?

According to Tricia Helfer, Mom is just a misunderstood parent, desperately trying to reconnect with her estranged sons.

What can you tell us about Mom, a.k.a Charlotte?

Tricia Helfer: Charlotte definitely is set up to be a little worrisome, that’s for sure, the way that Lucifer and Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) are quite terrified that she’s possibly going to show her face in L.A. In reality, Charlotte — Mom — is somebody that loves her children and loved her life before being banished down to hell.

There’s been a lot of miscommunication happening between her boys and her, and she wants to set the record straight. She wants to be with her boys, but she also wants to set the record straight.

Can we expect to learn more about her agenda?

We’ll learn a lot about Mom in the second episode. We’ll learn a lot about the miscommunication between Lucifer and Mom. The first few episodes, it’s definitely getting to know their history and getting to know a little bit about what happened and getting to know her.

She’s also never been in human form before. The body of Charlotte Richards, who she ends up inhabiting, doesn’t make her too happy. She dislikes humanity, and the fact that she has to be stuck in an earthly skin-sack isn’t to her liking very much.

If you could describe her in one word, what would it be?

Misunderstood.

Can you tease why she maybe doesn’t like humanity very much?

You’ll definitely find out in the second episode.

She blames humanity in many ways for kind of the dissolving of her idyllic life. You find out early on what makes her tick and what this dislike for humanity is about. It certainly lends itself to some comedy that she has to be stuck in an earthly skin-sack. It’s not that she doesn’t know about humanity, she just doesn’t know all the ins-and-outs of daily life as a human. She does have a bit of a learning curve to catch up on now that she’s down in L.A.

Can we expect Mom to have her own mythology and powers?

It’s hinted upon and definitely fairly early in the season. She’s certainly a powerful, supreme being — the ultimate goddess in many ways, but she’s not in her own form … I don’t think she expects any physical power necessarily, having taken over human form, but I think the more she’s in the body, the more some of her own attributes start to come out. That’s about all I can say on that without giving away a spoiler.

What’s her relationship with Maze going to be like, given that Maze was her torturer in hell?

Yeah, they certainly don’t like each other too much. In many ways, it’s more on Maze’s (Lesley-Ann Brandt) part because Mom was the one that Maze couldn’t control and couldn’t ever get through, which is not a common thing for Maze. Maze can usually have her way or control most things. Mom’s kind of that enigma that was either stronger than her or smarter than her or something.

There’s a lot of miscommunication between Lucifer and Mom. Maze, to her benefit, only know’s Lucifer’s side of the story. Lucifer only knows his side of the story. There’s some things that Lucifer — and hence Maze — believe about Mom that aren’t necessarily the truth, so in the first couple of episodes, those things need to get dealt with. It’s not necessarily Maze’s fault that she dislikes Mom.

What’s Mom going to think of Lucifer and Chloe, given that she doesn’t like humans?

In the first part of the season, Mom doesn’t really know about their relationship yet. She knows that he’s working with the police, but her interactions, while she may have seen Chloe (Lauren German), she doesn’t really understand their relationship yet.

But definitely, coming to the episodes that we’re starting to film now, she’s now able to kind of take in stuff around her. Once she starts settling in and she starts moving towards her agenda, then she starts seeing his relationship with Chloe and how close he is with her. She’ll start to be more aware of it, and I think she is hugely surprised with his fascination with humans and with his closeness with this one particular human.

Will she like it? I doubt it, but we haven’t shot any of that yet. I don’t know exactly where we’re going, but it definitely goes against her own feelings, so I don’t think it will make her happy.
